“I guess it would be pretty scary to see a body, even if it had been weathered down to a skeleton”

I can’t really recall when I first downloaded this book, but I can remember the way that the cover caught me and the title made me wonder just what this ‘Cellar Door’ was hiding. As someone who enjoys a thrilling novel, a novel filled with the horror of a dystopic universe or even something that over steps a modern societies boundaries, Cellar Door seemed to be the perfect book for me.

As a short story, being merely thirteen pages long on my tablet, I was already wary. The first question I asked was, ‘could a story really be thrilling enough with only thirteen pages of text?’ In some cases the answer to this question is positive and in some ways this is the answer for Cellar Door. With a mimicry of elements of Gothic horror, Petersen explores the idea of death and ghosts and the supernatural. The victim had no back story and we’re only give the appearance of a decaying body from the eyes of a terrified young boy, and the perspective of the character that we receive appears to be a regular Byronic hero.

I typically have a problem with reading narratives that are set in the first person and in this case I couldn’t connect with the narrator very much. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that ghosts and the supernatural are topics that I have a debate about over time as to whether or not I believe in the idea, or maybe it was the way he was portrayed. Or maybe it was just the tone that was set by the language that was used. On the other hand, I can understand why many people could relate to the reaction of the narrator, the indifferent nature is something that I’m sure many people would have in this situation should they find out about their friend finding something that just seems so taboo that it couldn’t possibly be real. There were definitely aspects of the character that would make him seem ‘real’. His laid back attitude and the undertones of arrogance make him appear as just a regular teenager that had been dragged somewhere by his friend who was trying to prove a point.

“Thriller” may be a bit of an overstatement as a genre but the suspense was definitely held towards the denouement of the story. Whilst the ending was something that could have easily been predicted from the first few lines, I still found myself wondering whether I was actually going to be right about how things were going to end for the narrator and his friend.

This book definitely has it’s problems but for what it seems to fall down on, but there are definitely aspects where it pulls itself up. Petersen’s writing did manage to keep me entertained and I’m still weighing up different aspects of the characters to try and figure out how I really feel about them. Overall, if you’re bored and looking for something to read, this is definitely something to read but I wouldn’t go to my friends and rave about how they needed to read this.
