i got to thinking (bad idea bcos now my brain's in circles) and i wonder if eni aluko being a tory ever played a part in why some players never spoke out for her during the sampson era. ive not been around long enough to have understood that situation that clearly, but even knowing abt her now gives me conflicted feelings. of course the racism is inexcusable, but i wonder if her relationship with her peers had anything to do with the lack of support. it kinda parallels the DFB-ozil problem(1/2)
where ozil retired bcos of racism directed at him by fans bcos he and gundogan took a picture with the turkish president. as time went on, unlike gundogan, ozil has a very odd relationship with the president, even inviting him to his wedding and getting him to be best man. no one in the german team spoke out for him directly either (some spoke but missed the point entirely). i dont know it's just interesting and now i cant stop thinking abt it
Hmmm this is an interesting perspective especially when put side by side with the ozil case. You may be right that it contributed to the situation and gave players an ‘excuse’ to not stand up for her. However I don’t think it can neither be excused nor thought that this was the main reason. There are unfortunately others with similar political views to Eni on the team (or at least Brexit-voters) so she’s not completely alone there.
Also, the racist abuse she received cannot be cancelled out by her other political beliefs, just because she has terrible ideological ideas doesn’t mean that the racism that was directed at her can be in any way condoned. I know that wasn’t what you were trying to put across but what I mean is that just because she’s a Tory with terrible takes is no reason for her teammates to completely ignore, and in fact actively support the source of these racist remarks, the racism she herself suffered.
I do agree that her relationship with the team may have factored in why she wasn’t defended (note: why she wasn’t not why they were right to not stand up for her), although ultimately I believe that the defining factor was putting their career and nt desires above causing a stir. The comparison with ozil’s situation is interesting though, and does more rightfully extend directly to his image and positioning. But one thing is calling someone out about their ideas and political marginalisation of whole groups of people, and another is allowing racism to permeate into a national team with little to no repercussions until ‘sexual misconduct’ is added to his list of offences
can we have casey stoney manage the lionesses yet please? seriously i beg- B
Thanks for being a fairly reasonable voice in the midst. I'm excited to see Sampson take the fall for everything he's ever done because frankly he deserves to be forgotten by history and banned from sports altogether. But that doesn't mean everyone needs to be thrown under the bus indistinctively, as you said several of them were not even in the team. Also, this is a callout for the OP who really could stand to not be so rude to you, who've done nothing but be supportive of Eni.
I'm all for Sampson never getting a job in football again - was pretty disgusted to see him get the job at Stevenage so quickly frankly. Hopefully clubs/the FA etc will finally realise that he's a racist who hasn't learned a thing no matter his apologies etc. and the people who were pleased to see him working in football again will realise he has no place there.
