A warm darkness washed over you, and the world seemed to be sinking. You could hear everything that was going on: the beeping of the machines, the panic in the surgeons’ voices, your life slipping away. Were the doctors aware that you were conscious of everything going on, or did they think you were completely unaware of the present? Probably the latter or they would’ve kept their voices calmer not to panic you.
“She’s a mess. Because the amount of blood loss and the multiple wounds. There’s no way we can save them both.” That must’ve been the main surgeon, a deep commanding voice that seemed to be declaring you a goner.
You felt almost as if you were floating. It was strangely peaceful inside your mind, despite the chaos going on outside. You thought death would’ve been more painful, but this was okay. Then you would be free.
“Her heart beat is fading. We have to do something right now.”
“We can’t save them both, so there’s no use in trying.”
Wait, but what did they say? They can’t save the both of them. They said that before, but what did they mean by that? Did someone else get hurt? Was it Mark, Jaebum or one of the others? No, they had to be safe. They just had to be, and if they weren’t, you had to protect them.
You couldn’t give up now. It would’ve been easy to let go. It was so peaceful, and if you just let go, you were sure you would drift off into nothingness, but you were supposed to be an alpha, right? That meant that you were responsible for the ones you loved, and as long as the Winchesters were out there, no one was safe. You couldn’t give up now.
The machines in the room started going haywire. “We’re losing her!”
No. Not like this. Everything started getting blurry. No. You had to hold on.
“Charging paddles to 200.”
Mark was miserable. Nurses brought him and the others updates every hour, but he stopped listening a while ago. “She’s stable,” meant things were going well as of five minutes ago, but in another five minutes, you might be crashing again. “They’re doing the best they can,” meant things weren’t looking good, and they weren’t sure if they’d be able to save you. It didn’t take Mark long to figure out that the only news he cared about was whether you lived or died. He didn’t want to know the in between stuff, because that only led to false hope or heart ache.
The others were on their toes the moment that door pushed open, though. Jaebum was eager to know what was going on with you and the baby. Between waiting for news for you and news from the others who went to search the forest, he was on edge. Even Junior didn’t really approach Jaebum.
Mark watched them carefully. Even though he didn’t want to hear what the nurses were saying, he couldn’t help but watch the others’ reactions. Jaebum’s expression seemed the same every time, but Junior’s changed. Youngjae was the real telltale. Mark’s eyes were glued to Youngjae, who would switch between a semi-smile and the verge of tears. The tears tore Mark up, but as long as that was the case, Mark wouldn’t lose all hope yet. If Youngjae did anything more, Mark knew that’s when he would start worrying.
Youngjae came over and sat next to Mark. A sigh pushed past his lips, but Mark didn’t want to look at him. Instead, he gazed at the brightness of the hospital. It seemed strange how white the hospital was. It would have been much more fitting if the walls were painted black, but he supposed that would be too depressing. At least it wouldn’t be blinding.
“Why isn’t Jackson back yet?” Youngjae asked. “He’s been gone for hours. Do you think something happened to him?”
Mark didn’t respond. He didn’t want to think about Jackson right now, even though he was sure that made him a poor alpha. He just wanted to focus on you, but that just hurt his heart. Maybe he deserved the pain, though. All of this was his fault.
“Jackson’s smart though. He wouldn’t get himself into trouble, especially not with two others there.” Youngjae was talking more to himself at this point, trying to be as convincing as possible, because he was worried about Jackson. “I just hope Yugyeom and Bambam have his back out there. Maybe I should’ve gone with them.”
The door opened again, and Mark glanced over out of curiosity. This time there was a doctor with the nurse, which meant one of two things: good news or bad news. Mark jumped to his feet and moved towards the doctor with heavy legs as Youngjae followed behind. Everyone waited in silence for the doctor to speak.
“We did everything we could.” Mark could feel his brain getting fuzzy. Those words were never a good sign. He found himself barely able to concentrate as the doctor said something that was irrelevant to procrastinate with the bad news. “There was just too much damage, and in the end, we couldn’t save the baby. Y/n is stable for now, but she still has a long way through recovery.”
“Can we see her?” Youngjae asked. Mark was glad Youngjae was there, because his tongue felt swollen, and even though he was dying to see you, he couldn’t speak.
“Y/n’s been through a lot, so it’d be best to limit the amount of visitation to immediate family members.”
You didn’t have immediate family members, Mark thought. It had just been you for most of your life, since your family abandoned you at a young age. “I’m the father of the baby,” Mark whispered. He hoped that would be enough to get him into the room to see you. “Was,” he quietly corrected, realizing that he wasn’t a father anymore. His chest tightened at the thought, and he needed to see you. He needed to apologize for everything, even if you told him to get out of there the moment you were conscious.
The doctor nodded. “Of course. Right this way.”
Mark followed the doctor, not even bothering to check everyone’s expressions. He was sure Jaebum was upset that Mark was getting special treatment, but he didn’t care. He just needed to see you.
Stepping into the room, Mark froze. It was strange seeing you hooked up to machines, all bruised and bandaged. He should’ve been there with you to protect you. The doctor left Mark’s side, but Mark just stood at the door, pained. He hated seeing you like this, and even though he was happy you survived, you weren’t out of the woods yet. There were still many things that could go wrong, but Mark prayed that the worst was over. You didn’t deserve any of this.
With lead feet, Mark ambled towards your bed, tears gripping his eyes. He pulled up a chair and slipped his hand into your one good one and squeezed your fingers. “I’m so sorry.” Mark choked on his own words. “I’m sorry for everything. I can understand if you never forgive me, but all of it was a lie. I was just trying to protect you. I still love you, and I want you.” He pushed back a sob and did his best to collect himself before he continued. “It was stupid, and if I had just… Maybe you wouldn’t be here.”
He squeezed your hand tighter and brushed a piece of hair out of your worn face. Looking at how battered you were sparked something inside of Mark, and for the first time since he found you he wasn’t numb. “I’m going to kill them for doing this to you.” He gritted his teeth together, raging. You didn’t deserve any of this.
You shifted in your sleep, making Mark pause. Suddenly the rage flitted away, and tears replaced the moment of emptiness. “Please don’t die.”
You slowly grew conscious of your surroundings, the cool air, the steady beeping on machines, and your broken body aching in bed. Then you opened your eyes slowly. A part of you wanted to keep your eyes shut and just sleep forever, but you needed to wake up. Not everyone was safe yet.
Your vision was blurry, but when it cleared, you saw Mark passed out, laying his head on your bed. A smile touched your lips, but it was painful. Then you wondered what Mark was doing here with you. Was he the one who had found you? This meant he still cared, right? You took a slow breath; it hurt to even breathe. At the moment you were just happy he was here with you, alive.
You squeezed his hand as hard as you could, which admittedly wasn’t very hard. However, it was enough to stir him in his sleep. He sat up with a dazed look on his face, but when he saw your eyes were open, he choked back a sob.
“Hey,” you whispered with a hoarse breath. You really needed some water. “Hey, it’s okay.” You weren’t sure why you were comforting Mark, when you were the one in the hospital bed, but his tears pained you even more.
Mark took a deep breath. “I’m so glad you’re awake.”
You pulled your lips tight. You were happy to see Mark, but then you remembered him telling you to leave. You looked off to the side, feeling confused. You still loved him though, even though he had never heard you say it. You didn’t have the energy to deal with these kinds of emotions right now.
Mark looked down. “I’ll leave, if you want me to, but there’s something you should know.”
Your stomach knotted, and your first thought was ‘who died?’ You waited for Mark to continue, but when he didn’t, you asked, “What happened?”
