On Using Markers

Because helping people is fun

Markers are tricky. You can't erase them, and they can wear out paper. So here are some things I picked up.

1. Use thick paper. I personally prefer smooth bristol but anything that is fairly heavy duty should be okay. Watercolor paper is particularly good but the texture can be a bit much. 2. If you can't afford thick paper make sure you have another piece of paper beneath the drawing surface.

3. Once you are done with your sketch make sure to either outline it with a inking pen(preferably something that won't bleed when you add color later) and erase the lines. Or outline with a regular marker but make sure to erase that pencil sketch. Unlike with pencil you really can't leave the sketch behind.

4. Layering. Layering color is a little different with markers. You really need to work fast, and not overdo it. Eventually the paper will not be able to take more color. Start with the lightest color and use it as a base. Work your way down in shade. Never scrub on the color. Lay down a layer, switch pens, and lay down another. This switch allows the color to seep in enough that it won't smear but damp enough to blend colors as you add the next shade.

5. Colorless blender's are hit and miss. Its usually safer to take your time layering shit. They can really create some neat effects though.

6. Never ever use lighter or darker versions of the same shade. Using blue green and a yellow green is fine. However if you use a hole bunch of shades that are decidedly green green it will look flat. Honestly I use the entire surrounding spectrum to shade. If I want something red I start out with peaches, oranges etc for the highlights and make it all the way down to purple for the shadows.

7. Draw big. Small doth not work with markers.
