🏒 Mark Howe Makes History in Hartford Whalers' First NHL Victory
The Hartford Whalers had to wait five games to taste victory in the NHL, but when it finally happened on October 19, 1979, it was worth the wait. In their first-ever NHL home game, played at the Springfield Civic Center, the Whalers took down the Los Angeles Kings 6–3.
Mark Howe was the star of the night, scoring just 1:31 into the game and then again in the second period with what turned out to be the game-winning goal. He also added an assist for a 3-point night. One of those assists? On a goal that was also set up by none other than his father, Gordie Howe. 💥
It was a milestone moment for the team and the Howe family alike.
Though the Whalers had a rocky start, with two losses and two ties in their first four games, they managed to scrape together a decent season, earning a playoff berth before being swept by the Montreal Canadiens.
