Every time I see the work of #MarkTansey I am amazed at how he uses different tones to set his scene in the work. The color seems to add either drama or nostalgia depending on the context of the work. Always amazing how he uses the shadows on the color wheel keeping an arresting consistency. Characterised by appropriation and the rejection of traditional artistic methods and values. Derived from the conceptual art of the 1960s and 1970s. Some artists would use other artists' works to show that originality and individual style no longer exist.
Influenced by Rene Magritte's 8 methods of bringing about the crisis of of the object. He creates corollaries for literary, philosophical, and historical concepts in visual allegories about the nature and implications of perception, meaning, and interpretation in art.
Mark Tansey is one of my heroes of postmodernism, and the painting really reflects to the viewer in a non-obvious manner. Panel one, is about washing clean the window or frame that classical painting was so addicted to. Portraying another perfectly persepectified world for the viewer to dream and reflect upon. The middle panel, being modernism, where people could not break the wall, and only went straight into it that art was a finite thing. Modernism did show that classical painting was not the only way that art could be, take for example Duchamp’s ‘Fountain’, 1912, where he used readymades. What Tansey is portraying, is that art still has a long way to go and that it does not stop with the period we know as ‘modernism’.
Realistically, it is a painting, about the act of painting - which is somewhat still genius. The final panel, is the viewer, the viewer is the chicken. The chicken, to me is somewhat of a dumbfound animal and an interesting choice of Tansey’s, one that i’ve never really been able to understand, Why call the viewer a chicken, what is it about the chicken that makes it the viewer and likewise. An intelligent thing for a chicken to do would be to look in a mirror so perhaps it is Tansye’s subtle way of making the viewer, after they realise they are the chicken, process that information and question his choice themselves.
