Frankenstein from Guillermo del Toro's perspective.
For him, Victor's creation is the most human of the characters. The Creature is misunderstood even by the person who gave him life, and suffers from being condemned to eternal existence, as he cannot die. In addition to his appearance, his inability to be accepted is a curse for him.
The Creature never chose to live, which is why he first demands a companion from Victor, and when Victor refuses, he decides to turn his former master's life into a living hell, until Victor ends up dying. But even then he cannot find peace, unlike when he held Elizabeth in his arms as she breathed her last breath, the only person who understood him despite the short time they spent together.
The Creature asks himself deeply reflective questions that no one answers, such as "What am I?" and "Why have I been unable to love or be loved?" This makes the viewer connect much more with the monster.
The origin may be a horror story, but Del Toro turns it into a film of sublime beauty and a journey of acceptance and management of the deepest feelings such as anger and loneliness. The 'macabre' becomes part of the story in such a way that it is no longer identified as such.
The director combines the dramatisation of Victor's emotional conflict with the grotesque aspect that always comes to mind when we think of Mary Shelley's work.
Another highlight of this film is that the monster is not focused on being 'scary', but on making us reflect and empathise with him.
The Creature is conceived as a standard-bearer for self-acceptance and inner search.
