Check Up | Lily & Marlene | June 26, 1980
Lily had talked to Remus and talked to Moody and there was just one conversation left that she felt necessary. Talking to Marlene about what had happened was more daunting - this was Marlene. Her friend, one of her best friends. Lily still felt a bit of residual guilt over missing the meeting in the first place, but she couldn’t do anything about that now. But she could make sure Marlene was okay.
There were a lot of consequences to a war. Loss of family and friends - Lily had experienced that first hand. Loss of safety and stability. Plans and dreams put on hold. But Lily thought this was the sort of consequence that was not expected. Fighting was inevitable. Lily had spent a lot of time considering what it might mean to have to harm someone, even kill - even someone on the other side would be a burden she had to bear. She believed in the value of life and that included the lives of those who were against her. But Marlene had attacked and injured one of their allies. Lily was sure that had to be a heavy weight.
James was busy, and Lily took extra precautions as she left Godric’s Hollow, mindful of her conversation with Remus. She found a floppy straw hat that covered her bright red hair - although now that she thought about it, that might not be quite what he meant. She wore it anyway, as she Apparated to Diagon Alley and then walked the rest of the way to Marlene’s flat.
Sometimes Lily found that she missed the Muggle world. Magic was immensely convenient but it wasn’t always quite the same, and sometimes she missed the simplicity of her life as a Muggle. She knocked at the door loudly, rubbing her back as she looked around. “Marlene, it’s Lily!” She waited a beat then added in her most pitiful voice, “Please let me in, my feet are killing me.”
