Caradoc couldn’t believe he actually saw her. It was a while and he couldn’t believe it. It was no secret that he was in love with Dorcas Meadows for a while. To be exact, almost all the years they would spend in Hogwarts, even a bit after it. He never told her how he felt for her. He was the funny one back in Hogwarts and she would probably think he is joking around, which wouldn’t be the case.

“Dorcas! It is very good to see you. How have you been?” He asked her, try not to sound to enthusiastic. He was always positive and everything, but he was also very clumsy when it comes to love. Caradoc did have occasional relationships, but none of them was serious. At least not for marriage.

“I am fine, I guess I just lost my balance.”

Dorcas smiled at the sight of Caradoc, he had always been a good friend to her. Some sort of the class clown, someone who was always making her laugh when she was sad. “Is good to see you too”, she smiled softly. “Uh... well, you know,  drowning in work”, she sighed dramatically. Her job as an auror was a demanding one; plus what she did for the Order, and the fact that she often volunteered in children’s orphanages.

Dating was definitely something that Dorcas did not thought about at all. She was too busy, and also too shy and awkward. How many times had Benjy tried to set her up with someone? The response was always the same: no. 

“Alright... where are you heading? I was thinking about getting a cup of coffee before returning to the office. Would you like to join me?” She then asked.

Caradoc was just finishing his job. He wasn’t really delighted with it, especially now when Dark Lord took over. But Car still have a hope they can make, that they can win. His choice of being in Order of the Phoenix was one of the best decisions which he could ever make. Of course, even if it means he is in constant danger.

He was carrying a large files of paper as usual, he did a bit of work at home as well. Even tho he knows he supposed to enjoy himself sometimes but he couldn’t help himself. Car really liked the job, even it wasn’t as easy as before. Of course, clumsy as he is, he bumped into the person who was probably standing in front of him. The half of the files fell on the ground no matter how hard he tried to keep them.

“Oh, I am so-so sorry. It’s been a long day, so I guess I wasn’t careful enough. Are you okay?”

As usual, Dorcas was drowning in work. No matter how efficient she was, there would always be more and more paperwork to fill, more administrative errands, more seals and approvals to move the cases forward. It was maddening and incredibly frustraning. So here she was, after waiting for an answer for two weeks, she decided to come in personally, maybe that way they’ll stop ignoring her memos. 

Dorcas was exiting the Wands permit office, grumbling to herself when she felt someone bumping into her, the files slipping from their hands. “Oh goodness!” She murmured, gracefully waving her two hands and charming the files to go back to the person in the correct order. Dorcas had gotten very good at wandless magic, she had been practicing it ever since she mastered the non-verbal spells. “There you go...” she smiled before recognizing the person. “No need to apologize, everything’s -- ohh, Caradoc...” she raised both eyebrows with surprise. “It’s all good, don’t worry, are you okay?”

Benjy was well aware that Dorcas was worried about him. If the roles had been reversed, he knew he would feel the same. While getting suspended from his job had definitely been rock bottom, Dorcas was one of the biggest reasons Benjy had forced himself to get his act together. If anything happened to him because of his own stupidity, he knew she would be devastated. Dorcas had already lost her mother. He couldn’t do that to his best friend. He couldn’t leave her alone.

“Thanks, Doe. I owe you big time. I’ll cook you any meal you want for a year,” Benjy promised. At the mention of therapy, Benjy began to shift uncomfortably. He tucked his hair behind ear, shaking his head slowly. “I don’t know,” he admitted with a shrug. “I mean, I know it’s got its benefits and all, but what am i supposed to say?” Benjy looked up at her. “That I’m part of an illegal vigilante organization and I… I killed someone?” Benjy’s voice lowered. He shuddered slightly, shaking his head more firmly now.

She couldn’t help but to chuckle and rolled her eyes playfully. “No need for that, but I guess I won’t refuse it either” she teased. Dorcas studied his reaction carefully, clearly he wasn’t convinced and she couldn’t blame him. “Perhaps we can ask Alastor or Albus ig they know someone trustworthy” she suggested.

“I mean, of course, this is such a personal thing, it’s entirely up to you, but it could be good for you”, she explained. “And I’m sure the board will be pleased to hear about you doing that”, Dorcas commented. “This is going to sound cold and detached, but sometimes it’s you or the other person, if you are under attack, you defend yourself, that’s a basic rule. And... well, is not like these people don’t know where they are getting themselves into. This is a war, Ben, there will always be causalties” Dorcas didn’t feel particularly bad for the Death Eater that died, or any Death Eater that died. She did feel bad for Benjy and how this has clearly affected him. “But I am sorry, I know how difficult it is the first time that it happens...” she had taken a few lives and she was sure she would take some more, it was hard, but eventually Dorcas learned to tune it out.

“Tea, yeah, tea is good,” Benjy nodded to confirm. What he really wanted was a stronger drink, something that would drown out his racing thoughts and dread. But Benjy knew that once he had his first sip of alcohol, he would not be able to stop. It was that desire exactly that had landed Benjy where he was, with his career hanging off a life line and his life pretty much in shambles at this point. He didn’t want to keep plummeting himself into the ground with his horrid decisions. He wanted things to go back to before the protest at Diagon Alley, but as Benjy now knew, some decisions were irreversible.

“Oh, Doe– Thank you,” he sighed in relief, reaching to take Dorcas’ hand and squeezing it gratefully. He was going to pull her into one of his own bone crushing bear hugs when her question caught him off guard. Benjy swallowed, withdrawing his hand to scratch the back of his neck. “Um, I haven’t really talked to anybody like that,” he admitted. “Do you know what Alcoholics Anonymous is? These muggles meet up in groups around the city and you just talk or listen. I don’t talk about magic or anything like that of course but, um, it’s been helping.”

“Alright”, she nodded and walked to the open kitchen. She filled in a kettle with water and then placed it on the stove. Dorcas then turned to face her friend. She was worried about him, worried about he spiraled and worried that he might relapse again. She also felt guilty for not being more present. Dorcas squeezed his hand affectionately and nodded her head slowly.

“Oh... well... I see...”, she nodded her head slowly, noticing how he was caught off guard by her question. “Yeah, I’ve heard of it”, she nodded her head slowly. “Okay, I think that also works, but yeah, I’ll testify for you”, she assured so he wouldn’t freak out about it. “Perhaps, you can consider doing therapy at some point? I go to therapy myself, you know, the panic attacks and my line of work... she’s really great”, she suggested carefully. “Jury might even see that as a sign that you are not taking this lightly”, she explained, squeezing his hand again before she stood up when the kettle began to whistle.

It had been a long shift at the office. It had been one of those nights where they spent it all around the country dealing with all kinds of criminals. It had been one of those mornings filling report after report on what had happened at night. Tired of the paperwork and suffering the consequences of being awake for over 48 hours, Marlene decided to leave the Ministry and take a short walk. Trying to catch a bit of fresh air, she ended up taking a seat on a bench at the park. The cold wind felt nice on her already reddening cheeks, enjoying the much needed break. Taking out a cigarette out of her pocket, she used her muggle lighter to lit it and took a rather long drag before looking up, only to see a familiar face. “Doe, hey!” The blonde greeted her friend before the tease rolled off her tongue. “Are you following me?”

Dorcas was heading back home after a long shift. She was ready to get under a warm shower, do her skin care routine, eat something and just get into bed with her book. She was exhausted, really, and couldn’t wait for a much deserved sleep in. As she was crossing the park, she heard a more than familiar voice calling her and she turned to see who it was. “Oh, Mar”, she smiled softly. “What? following you? No, I’m heading back home” she explained, smiling as she approached to the bench. “What are you doing here?” She asked instead as she took a seat next to her.

While Benjy was no longer a drunken wreck, thankfully, he was now simply a nervous wreck. His entire career was on the line and he had no way of predicting how it would go for him at the review hearing. Benjy ran a hand through his dark curls, shaking his head slowly. “I’ve got too many nerves to eat,” he admitted. Food and cooking were some of his biggest comforts, but now his stomach was too tied up in knots to even consider eating. He didn’t even respond to Dorcas pulling him in for a hug, just automatically embraced her back, sighing into her shoulder. “Thanks,” he mumbled at his friend gratefully.

“That’s, um, actually part of why I came over,” he said as he pulled away. Benjy cleared his throat and sank into the sofa nearest him. “I was doing some research and the hearings actually allow me to bring in someone as a sort of reference to my character. Someone who can swear up and down and bear witness that I’m not a horrible person, I suppose.” Benjy bit his lip, looking at Dorcas. “You’d be brilliant for it. You’re an Auror and you’re my best friend. I think it would help a lot.” He knew it was a big favor to ask of her and he wasn’t taking it lightly.

“I see”, Dorcas responded soflty, rubbing her hand over his back soothingly. “How about tea?” She offered instead, still hugging him until he pulled away. Honestly, she would be in a similar state, and probably at his place, either throwing up her guts or just staring at a very specific point of his wall while he tried to cook something that she would not be able to stomach. Benjy was the person Dorcas would go if anything like this occurred.

She proceeded to sit down as well and listened attentively. His request took her slightly by surprise, but Dorcas nodded her head immediately. “Of course”, she said softly. “I can do that, yes”, she would do that for him, and she would do it because she genuinely believed that he was a great person who just made a mistake. “Have you thought of bringing someone who has been with you through this process? Like a professional, I suppose”, his therapist or someone who could professionally vouch for him, not just her as his best friend.

As the Wizarding World adjusted to the new year, Frank had felt a bit bored at work.  It seemed that a lot of people’s new years resolution was to abstain from crime.  Currently, it was nothing more than petty theft cases and one case of a missing Cauldron pot in Southhampton.  It was quiet, almost too quiet for Frank’s liking. A sense of paranoia had him searching for danger at almost every turn. Ever since Birmingham, he had never enjoyed the quiet. Constantly searching for a distraction. 

Perhaps it was that longing for distraction that led him to the Leaky Cauldron for a bite of dinner. The bar was particularly busy and almost every seat was taken, bar one high stool beside a particularly drunk fella and a empty side of the booth facing Dorcas Meadowes. “Sorry to disturb you, Dorcas.” Frank greeted, “Do you mind if I sit to grab a bite? I’ll be painfully good, I promise.”

Dorcas recognized Frank immediately, the two of them worked in the Auror Office. “Painfully good? Is that even a thing?” She couldn’t help but to smirk playfully. “And here I thought you grew tired of seeing my face every day, Frank”, she teased, closing her book and put it away. She and Frank were usually paired up together for work stuff, and Dorcas had to admit that the two of them made a great team. 

“What’s up? What are you having?” She asked, meaning his meal. “It never ceases to amaze me how quickly this place gets packed” she admited, finally looking around. She had been so absorbed by her reading that she failed to notice how full the house was.

Benjy couldn’t sleep. Whereas a month ago he would have easily cured that problem through downing half a bottle of liquor of his choice, Benjy was using every bit of his willpower to avoid that route. He had not touched alcohol in nearly four weeks, which now felt like four years. He hadn’t felt the solace that it brought, the comfort from his guilt that it offered, in nearly a month. But where usually it was nightmares that kept him up late, this time it was pure nerves. 

Tomorrow was Benjy’s hearing before his superiors at the Department of Magical law enforcement. They were going to review his suspension from the department, which had been issued over a month ago, the result of him showing up intoxicated to a job assignment. His career as Curse Breaker was at stake, which meant everything in the world to him. He couldn’t fathom not being a Curse Breaker as he had been working towards it since he was at Hogwarts. To think that it was his own carelessness and behavior that had jeopardized his career only made Benjy’s nerves spike more. After pacing his flat restlessly and tossing and turning in bed, Benjy knew he needed company before he did something he’d truly regret.

“Tickets to the Talking Heads and Nepalese food,” Benjy answered Dorcas at once. He entered his friend’s flat easily, though his laidback nature was gone, replaced instead with an anxious air around him. “Did I wake you up?” Benjy frowned at her.

At first, Dorcas had been keeping a close eye on Benjy, but after a few visits to St. Mungo’s and catching up with her work, she may have missed a thing or two. So she hadn’t been aware that tomorrow was the important day, otherwise, she would’ve been at his place right now. It just hit her when she saw him standing there and she couldn’t help but to feel bad about it.However, Benjy came to her instead and, naturally, Dorcas welcomed him with open arms.

She nodded her head, relieved when he answered her safety question and closed the door behind him and locked it. “Nah, I was about to re-heat some left overs”, she shook her head slowly. “Are you hungry?” She asked, reaching out for her wand and with an elegant flick of her wrist, she lowered the volume of the music. She then approached to her friend. “Come here, give me hug” she said softly, wrapping her arms around him. “Everything will be okay. Do you need me to go to the hearing with you tomorrow?”

Alice was nothing if not a people person. She didn’t mind living alone in her solitary little cottage on the outskirts of Hogsmeade; her quiet mornings with Cinnamon were peaceful, provided the cat got his food on time, and going to bed alone rarely bothered her. But she did like to fill her days with company, be it in the form of friends or coworkers or fellow order members. While she technically knew that some people did enjoy being alone, it was never her first thought when she saw someone by themselves. So when she caught sight of Dorcas sitting at an empty table with a book, it really was a selfless instinct that led her over to the younger woman, if a somewhat misguided one. 

“You’re not eating alone, are you?” Alice didn’t really wait to hear Dorcas’ answer before sitting down, it was obvious she was the only person at the table. “I can sit with you. I was just going to grab something to go but I have the time.”

Her eyes widened slightly at the sight of Alice. She liked her, she had always been nice to her. However, she could sometimes be a little too much, especially for someone like Dorcas who was definitely in the introverted spectrum of life. Because her parents had always been public people, her life had always been loud and chaotic and the mere thought of it gave her migrane.

She opened her mouth to answer, but Alice already sat down and Dorcas forced herself to smile. “Uh... yeah, sure, of course”, she responded, closing her book unwillingly and put it back in her totebag. “Yeah, I was eating alone...” she then responded to her first question. “I mean, you don’t have to stay if you have other things to do” she then added.

Dorcas had just got off the shower and was on her pajamas, ready to re-heat something for dinner and finish some reports that were due to next week. She put on her record player, some french vinyl her dad brought her from his last trip to Toulouse. With a bottle of water, Dorcas watered her indoor plants. No need for the ones in the balcony, it has been raining for days.

She was humming softly, her body easily swaying in sync with the rythm of the music. Dorcas moved across the living room with the grace and poise of a ballerina. It was a good thing she was alone, she would never act like this in front of anyone. Once the plants were done, she headed to the kitchen to refill the bottle and that’s when the doorbell rang. 

Frowning, she approached to the door and looked through the peephole. “What in the name of Rowena...?” Dorcas murmured, before grabbing her wand and opened the door. Since this was a muggle building, she let Benjy in first. “What did I get you for your eighteenth birthday?” She asked calmly. The real Benjy would know that she got him tickets for his favorite band’s concert and then dinner at his favorite restaurant. She hated this, she hated the lack of trust, especially with how broken he seemed to look, but they couldn’t afford the luxury of being reckless.

Rolling her eyes ever so slightly, there was a slight ease to Emmeline as she worked on Dorcas that one didn’t usually find when she was busy treating patient after patient. There was usually little time for jokes and affection in her job and as disgruntled as she may be that Dorcas had rendered herself injured yet again, she was pleased to see the younger woman despite it all. “I can be about tough love when it’s needed.” She gave the other woman an almost teasing look as she got the second bottle ready to use.

Shaking her head at Dorcas’ joke, the hint of a smile appeared on her face. “I’ll see what I can conjure up if you’re good.” Waiting for Dorcas to prepare herself, it wasn’t long before the potion was droppered into the wound on her arm, having an immediate effect as the skin appeared to sow itself up without delay. “See? What wasn’t too bad, was it?”

Dorcas chuckled softly. Not that she needed to get hurt to see Emmeline, but it was nice to see her regardless. “How’s work? Do you have a lot of patients lately?” She then asked curiously, before her lips curved into a playful smirk. “I’m sure you’ll outdo yourself” she teased.

She couldn’t help but to hiss a bit when the potion touched her wound, it stung, but it was nothing compared to the pain she felt when she was hexed, or even the worst days of her menstrual cramps. “It was almost enjoyable, emphasis in almost”, she smiled softly.. “At what time do you get out? Would you like to grab dinner?”

Emmeline knew that it was inevitable, that people that she knew would end up hurt, but it didn’t mean for a second that she had to like it. Even if it was someone who landed themselves here a little too often for her liking. “Then perhaps I need to prod a little harder and it’ll teach you a lesson.” There wasn’t many that Emmeline was able to joke with quote so easily, especially not when she was at work, but Dorcas was a special case. It was easier this way.

Nodding her head as Dorcas told Emmeline what she knew about the curse that had hit her, the options ran through her mind of what would be the best next step. “If it was then you were very lucky. Not everyone gets off as lightly as this.” Unstopping a small bottle, she turned towards Dorcas, a pipette in hand. “Hopefully this should do the trick. I just need you to hold still so I can drop it straight into the wound.”

Dorcas couldn’t help but to chuckle at her joke. “I didn’t know you were all about tough love, Emm” she joked back. For someone who was more in the awkward spectrum of life, interacting with Emmeline made her seem like pretty normal. It was like Benjy, it was easy being around them, it was easy to joke, to sass, basically to be herself.

“Yeah, I guess so” she agreed with a heavy sigh. Dorcas then looked up at her friend and took in a deep breath. “Okay, yes, I can do that. Will I get a lollipop after?” she joked before sitting very still, so much that, after a while she looked like a statue.
