Art Week is about exploring new ways you can interact with art and the local community. These events can help even the most unpracticed artist become an active participant in Des Moines’ booming creative scene.
Be drawn by the Portrait Studio at the Mars Cafe. 4 PM, Monday. Portrait Studio is a traveling art experience designed to bring unique art by real artists to communities and organizations. All artists have a unique style and practice outside of the studio. Portraits are $10 per face.
Paint a Plein Air canvas with the Des Moines Social Club. 6:30 PM, Monday. Use your creative skills to paint a canvas to be displayed at the Des Moines Social Club. You pick up your canvas on Friday June 15th and have the weekend to paint a scene in the Des Moines area. All of the completed works will be displayed in the show Monday June 18th in the Viaduct Gallery. There will be a small supply fee for participation.
Participate in Performance Art and an Open Mic at the Art Terrarium 7 PM, Monday. Special guest Performance Artists Serena Fath and Mary Cat Lawler will be kicking off this event exhibiting their creative expression followed by a Q&A with both artists. This is also an Open Mic event. Bring your open mind, curiosity and creativity to this event. We want to experience what the creative community has to share! We would say this event is kid friendly, but discretion should be advised.
Participatory Walk Through the Pappajohn Scultpure Park 6 PM, Tuesday. Designed and led by Art Center staff: Mia Farrell and Kara Fedje. Sometimes to really see, we need new ways for looking and this guided experience of the Pappajohn Sculpture Park offers just that. Guests of all ages are invited to participate in a variety of facilitated activities and stimulating prompts that explore how personal connections with art can be formed as well as develop an awareness of space—both around, and inside ourselves. Reservations required.
Gain Feminist Fuel at the Des Moines Art Center 6 PM, Thursday. We know that fighting the patriarchy is exhausting. Stop by the Art Center for a fun, feminist-focused evening that's sure to reinvigorate you. Screen print a T-shirt or tote bag featuring exclusive designs created for the exhibition In the Spirit of Louise Noun with our friends at The Side Garage. Grab some fuel for the resistance from the cash bar that will be serving up signature coffee cocktails. Mix, mingle, and make before taking time to explore the museum. Organ Concert & Art Show at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral 6 PM, Friday. Join us for a festive evening of music and art! Central College professor and organist Mark A. Babcock will play selections on the renowned Casavant organ, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. After the performance, there will be a light reception and a chance to view the work of local artists on display throughout the Cathedral.

First day of school. Went great. Sunny day in a beautiful building with wonderful teachers. Felt idyllic. Left there for yoga, beat myself up. Still feeling the twitch hours later. Left there for Mars to take down a show. Minor frustrations. Left there for home, to clean up Alex's room. Tony helped. Buffalo helped. Felt like someone died. Alex IS A MESS. I found more than six dollars in change in there. We miss Alex. Left there for suzanas and dinner and socializing but I was mostly too run down for it. What I really wanted was to be in a bathtub or a giant bed receiving complements and gentle conversation. Got some of that. Really wish I had that now. Have a cat and 30 Rock tho
Such a day. Woke up with a girl, met a new therapist whom I liked very much and seemed most accepting of where I am in my life, got a haircut, got cute, had a show, falling asleep with Leo the greyhound. Mia gave readings at my show and A. I love her and B. I loved my reading. I selected "Where am I at right now?" From her menu and she laid down cards for superego, ego, and sub ego. I have so many more notes for today but I am beat and this bed is way better than mine. Up again early to read at the art center.
