I saved the most special piece from Space Bling for last! (Earlier today) This Martian Greenery necklace isn’t on theme for Moonday (maybe #MarsMonday?), but since it finally feels like spring might be here to stay in NYC, it is certainly apropos. Here’s Susanna’s description of the piece, and why it is special for 2017 (most links from Susanna, some added by me):
My new "Martian Greenery" necklace was inspired by Pantone's 2017 color of the year, Greenery. The necklace is built on a vintage bakelite domino and with vintage mid century French millinery ribbon. The central space image in Martian Greenery is a Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter image from 2015 and the scientific significance of the image was that it proved Mars has running water that changes seasonally so it seemed evocative of the spirit of "Greenery"
Most of the necklaces I design are built from vintage midcentury Bakelite chips and Dominoes that I obtain from antique dealers. In part, because I like working with a lot of preexisting materials. Also because bakelite, an early consumer plastic, stopped being manufactured in 1953. One year later, the International Council of Scientific Unions adopted a resolution enabling artificial satellites to be launched. This paved the way for Sputnik 1 in 1957 and the dawn of the space age.
The color is "symbolic of new beginnings" according to Pantone, "trans-seasonal" and lends itself to many color combos which sometimes get it referred to as "nature's neutral."
Susanna also has some beautiful designs inspired by Cassini’s final year so we’ll certainly feature more Space Bling soon!
