Try as I might, it's not easy to pin down exactly what's going on inside singer/songwriter Marta DeLeon's head. The Meaning of LIfe, the Brooklyn art rock band she fronts, contains such an unexpected mixture of rock's building blocks, that only a video as bizarrely fun as ''Laura V" would do. From directors Jeremiah McVay and Steven Huber, the band creates a world where people get eaten when dates go wrong, and guitarists run around the beach shouting psychedelic wisdom.... just check it out for yourself to see what I mean. Intensely artful, yet easily accessible, singer Marta DeLeon makes us believe in the experience. And pretty soon, you'll be chanting 'like gloves' along with her too. Taken from their just released debut EP 'Play Fuego,' the music is fun, soaring, and surreal all at once.

Brooklyn trio The Meaning of Life cite Yo La Tengo and The Jesus and Mary Chain (along with Laura Palmer and Route 66) as influences. Those sounds are definitely there on the band’s debut EP, Play Fuego. Whether it’s the 80s post punk / proto-shoegaze of “Laura V.” or the dreamy wall of sound that closes “Four Legs and Fangs,” all of the songs here feature the dreamily beautiful noise of Christian Gallardo’s guitar.

And, yes, if you listen closely, you may get a bit of that David Lynch-ian vibe.

What differentiates The Meaning of Life from many of the other dream pop bands working today are the smoky vocals of Marta DeLeon. Rather than being buried behind layers of noise and reverb, DeLeon’s voice is a focal point of many of the tracks, even when it’s just delivering a series of “ooh’s” and “ah’s” as on the EP’s lyric-free opener “Play with Fuego.”

Play Fuego is a solid debut and should slot rather nicely into your soundtrack for hot, hazy, lazy summer days at the beach.

Their new EP, Play Fuego, perfectly demonstrates such capabilities with five songs that bring together the serene chill of dream pop with the knowing sensibilities of post-punk. From the blissed-out grooves of ‘Play With Fuego’ to the straight-ahead rock of Laura V., The Meaning of Life present a sound that is both singular and engaging.

The highlight of the piece is a six-minute ballad entitled ‘Four Legs and Fangs,’ which not only holds it all together but also displays everything that makes this band so promising. It’s a delight, a real beatific work, combining typically enchanted vocals to layers of warm, delayed guitar. Tongue firmly in cheek, the band does not provide the answer for its own question. The meaning of life? We may yet never know. But I’m guessing it has something to do with standing back, slowing down, and getting caught up in sounds like these.
