James Joyce with Sylvia Beach, Shakespeare and Company, [Paris 1920]
Warm sunshine merrying over the sea … two shafts of soft sunlight fell across the flagged floor from the high barbicans: and at the meeting of their rays a cloud of coalsmoke and fumes of fried grease floated, turning. … He watched her pour into the measure and thence into the jug white milk, not hers. Old shrunken paps. She poured again a measureful and a tilly. Old and secret she had entered from a morning world, maybe a messenger. … She praised the goodness of the milk, pouring it out. Crouching by a patient cow at daybreak in the lush field, a witch on her toadstool, her wrinkled fingers quick at the squirting dugs. They lowed about her whom they knew, dewsilky cattle.
— Telemachus, Ulysses, 1922.

Shoal Tower (1847) opposite Kingston City Hall, Ontario, Canada, was erected by the British to protect the entrance to the Rideau Canal. A second Martello tower is just across Kingston Harbor and there were two more in the area.
"Guardians of the Galaxy"
The Milky Way over two Martello towers. The tower in the foreground is at Fort Henry, and the one in the distance is on Cedar Island in the St. Lawrence River. This was a tricky shot to get because it was very windy at the time, and the bright lights on the foreground with dark sky beyond made it necessary to shoot HDR to get a decent exposure all around.
