On the bright side, doing kung fu and tai chi helped my back instead of injuring it further. So choosing to go to class wasn't just a case of replacing common sense with KT tape. Though I will say that I am probably 80% KT tape by volume at present.
Things that are not helpful to say to a [female] martial artist/black belt
"I'm not going to mess with you now!"
"I guess I'd better take you seriously now!"
"Your husband better watch out!"
"Watch out Nick!" (who tf is Nick? I know many of them but have no idea why this person said that to me and who they meant.)
"I guess I'd better be nice to you!"
"Can you come whoop my husband?" ( steak and shake waitress, meaning it as a hilarious joke.)
You should be respectful of everyone and do your best to be kind to everyone... Nothing magically happened when my belt color changed. I didn't become more worthy of respect or gain more skills. Same me, same martial artist, still learning and gaining skills. Lastly, I'm not sure what weird form of sexism it is to imply that because I do something that kind of involves self defense that the men around me need to "watch out."
I know some of these are said to all martial artists, but I think some of the nonsense is female-specific (but maybe guys get comments like "I bet your wife feels safe").
Add your own!
When the opponent is taller than you and thinks you can't get them, but you're small and fast and can still kick their head ;)))
A martial arts competition sandwiched between two plane trips is an invitation to stiffness, exhaustion, and wonderful memories. I fell fast asleep on the plane home and began listing dangerously to the left. I hope I didn't actually end up leaning on my neighbor at any point.
Stretched for an hour today and I may finally be un-stiff.
Nothing like spacing out during a sparring drill after a LONG day at work and getting punched in the face. It wasn't HARD and I'm fine but there's always that moment of PERHAPS I SHOULD HAVE BLOCKED THAT.
It was such a long day at work. Time to take a shower with candles (something I only ever do when I'm at sensory overload) and put some Tiger Balm on my knees.
Apologies to everyone who witnessed this become a martial arts and fencing blog.
Honestly, I feel like I mostly post about how martial artists in media never seem to be having any fun.
Person: so is that accurate?
Me: no clue.
Me: but he doesn't seem to be having fun, so ...
Guess who has two thumbs and won't be at the gym for the next 10 days? That's right my skin infection having ass.
