To start what you've always wanted to start. To make the changes you've always wanted to make. One of my ongoing personal goals is to be able to say that I feel better today than I did a year ago. That my body is more functional today than it ever was. That my mind is getting sharper and healthier everyday and that my connection to something bigger than this physical world is growing every year. Here is the thing though, to be able to grow, you need to start with accepting where you are first. Even when it's not pretty. Self-acceptance is the start of the growth process. Taking responsibility for where you're at and accepting it gives you back the power to do something about it. It makes you realize that it is a choice. You made choices that lead you were you are and now you can choose to alter the direction with some applied work and discipline. This is growth mindset. The practice of martial arts teaches you to have a flexible mind, to take responsibility for your growth, for learning. It's a lesson hidden under all the repetition, the consistency and the discipline. (Funny how a flexible mind grows from a structured practice!) Watching others apply something they've just learned while you've been trying to do it for months. Feeling discouraged and frustrated yet still wanting to get it! So you keep practicing until one day it clicks and you have it! That's accepting where you are yet knowing that change is possible with the right kind of work and guidance. Imagine having to do this throughout your martial arts journey, for every technique, kick and throw you learn. Now you're building neural pathways for a growth mindset. You're building a brain that knows that whatever you want to learn or become is possible with applied work and discipline.
