A “Standing” or “Citizen” soldier #CivilWar Monument- Chester, Vermont. In the 1860s and 70s several sculptors including Carl Conrad & #MartinMilmore began working on war memorials focusing on the average soldier who went off to fight. Mostly contemplative, weapon down at their side. As you can see on the inscription here, most common soldiers were buried on, or near the battlegrounds where they fell and their bodies never returned home (commissioned officers might be the exception). A list of names of the fallen became an important motif in memorials to the Civil War, with some towns and cities forgoing statuary all together and just installing an inscribed tablet- occasionally in a building such as a library dedicated as a memorial #standingsoldier #citizensoldier #warmemorial #chestervermont (at Chester, Vermont) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMvOoOSFqf8/?igshid=12aeq2hdqsshi
