Playing spin the bottle felt juvenile, a party activity that prepubescent kids obsessed over and made far too big of a fuss about. But it also served as an excellent form of entertainment. Eli didn’t see himself getting paired up with anyone, given the fact that the group was fairly large. That suited him just fine; he hadn’t come to this party expecting a love connection or anything of the sort. Each pairing that had to kiss was more preposterous than the last. The stranger the match up, the more hilarious it was to watch it unfold. Eli watched as Jake stood up from his spot and went to the bottle, giving it a good spin. Gradually it slowed down and eventually stopped, Eli’s jaw dropping open a bit as it landed on him. It was awkward on multiple levels -- the two of them were forging a new friendship, and their shared history with Clare made doing even that complicated. He hesitantly stood up and walked to the center of the circle, hands shoved into his pockets. “We uh, we don’t have to, you know.” he said, smiling as convincingly as he could. It wasn’t that he was opposed to kissing Jake, but he realized how strange it would seem and how it might complicate matters. Not only that, but he was sure Jake would pass him over in a heartbeat, far preferring girls.

Eli was only staying over the Edwards-Martin home because Clare insisted that she wanted him to. Despite the fact that the two weren’t romantically entangled, the girl always had enough of a pull on him that he had trouble saying no to her. He didn’t bother mentioning the fact that sleep wouldn’t find him at someone else’s house. After what happened with Adam a few weeks back, he wasn’t about to risk it. Eli realized later that he should have known Helen would have a bone to pick about the arrangement, insisting that Eli sleep in Jake’s room instead -- god forbid he and Clare lie next to one another platonically. Knowing better than to challenge it, Eli agreed and luckily, Jake was perfectly fine with the idea. For someone he hadn’t had the best history with, the other boy was surprisingly open to the idea. The progress Eli had made in working through his resentment had never been more obvious, in his opinion.

He grabbed the pillow and blanket Clare had given him and walked over to Jake’s room, knocking before he entered. Eli was already settled in his pajamas, a loose black t-shirt and plaid patterned pajama pants. For a moment, he felt a little silly being in sleeping attire around Jake. They’d only seen each other at school; it was somewhat disorienting to see the other boy in a comfortable, easygoing environment. His room even seemed to echo his mild personality, the colors and overall environment soothing. “Hey,” he greeted softly, waving before he walked over to Jake. “Thanks again for this. I know it’s a pain in the ass but Clare really gave me a guilt trip about staying -- the pout and all.” he laughed, holding his pillow against his chest and giving it a gentle squeeze. While he didn’t want to feel nervous, being around others at night always gave him slight anxiety. “She said you have a pull-out bed, I think? I wouldn’t even mind lying on the floor if not, no big deal.”
