New Smug Jugs Found!
Ok Smug Juggers, I've got some wonderful news today! @kfithen and I found a whole genre of smug-jug-esque jugs!
The Martin brothers pioneered a genre of stoneware pottery called *martinware*. They created both vessels and figures with incredible detail and skill.
One of their distinct styles just so happened to be jugs with faces! Martinware face jugs are highly expressive, and have all the style of our favorite smug jug. Many martinware face jugs can be described as having sly or cheeky expressions; some can only be described as just plain devious. Smug Juggers, I implore you to explore this brand new addition to the Smug Jug family!
[Image ID: A studio image of a martinware face jug. The jug is yellow and is angled to the left of the camera. It features a devious facial expression: giving a large, cheeky smile while side eyeing the camera. The jug has accentuated cheeks, chin, and brow ridge. It's face is crunched up and the jug looks cheery, and as if it just pulled a sly trick on someone. /End ID]
Salt-glazed stoneware. Incised 'R W Martin & Bro./London & Southall', and dated 8-1899.
