A friend from Japan came to stay with me over the New Year. I met her 15 years ago and we have met up since in various parts of the world as we both traveled. Our friendship is an ongoing intersecting of orbits. We know each other through duty-free alcohol, couch-surfing, back-packing and strange lands. When you are a traveler you are also a collector, all those new experiences and customs, friendships are discovered in flux, the ongoing refinement of your edges against the unfamiliar.
While Manami was here I took her to my hometown in Maruia Valley so we could climb mountains and get lost in the bush. We took the track up through the Alfred River gorge beside Mt Mueller and stayed at the Lake Daniels hut. Up in the old beech forests of the Main Divide I remembered what it was like to be lost in a cloud. Everything on the mountains was dripping wet, yet we were sheltered from the rain under the canopy of trees. A forest so old and tired the limy moss caught it all. And the smell up there of that mountain lake, like the clearest memory of childhood.
