A day late for @homesteadchronicles Mother worldbuilding prompt!

It should come to little surprise that a nation that lives and breaths by its military might has mothers in all areas of its army. People often spend years at a time serving, forming bonds, friendships and romances. Marriages and first time births are milestones many reach while on the Trail.

Morrigan Jewel herself gave birth to five of her nine children while actively serving. 

Many choose to stay at the camp or even to return home during the heaviest part of their pregnancy but Maternity Armor is available for the warrior mothers who brave the fray.

The idea behind this sketch was the thought of what if Maruss cut so many ties during the battle that after it was over, no one trusted him, leaving him alone and, just maybe, regretting his actions.

Worldbuilding Wednesday: Tradition - Taken Names

A day late but I’ve arrived! For @homesteadchronicles !

I’m sure most people are aware of the tradition of taking their spouses name when the they marry, typically the the wife taking the husband’s. However in Maruss names are not taken patrilineality or matrilineality but instead the spouse of lower social standing will take the name of the higher standing one.

Where you stand in Marussian culture is a complicated equation of wealth, birthright, lineage and deeds. It is a tumultuous equation as well, paupers to kings and saints to urchins very well overnight with a single incredible feat or scandal.

This does put a lot of pressure on firstborns, who are usually the majority inheritors of a family’s fortune, to choose a proper spouse. 

Its uncommon for a person to change their last name if something happens to their spouse’s standing, assuming what happened wasn’t divorce worthy. It is however very common for children’s last names to be changed after or during a divorce usually to which ever parent is awarded custody.

For reference, Jadette Jewell, the firstborn daughter of renowned war hero Morrigan Jewell who previously was of no social standing, easily married into nobility and kept her last name.

@homesteadchronicles‘s sailing prompt is a perfect time to talk more about the Unresting Sea and Maruss’ ports!

Maruss has two major port towns, the country’s capital, Lynrask Port and Whalespear. 

Whalespear is aptly named as it used to be the center for whale hunting until Wolf Squid started using the waters. Fisherman still occasionally bring in whales but usually only manage to bring in parts of it and their attempts to bring down the Wolf Squid numbers haven’t been terribly successful. Thankfully Wolf Squid aren’t awful tasting.

Lynrask Port is a center for trade and home of the Royal Family. They deal primarily with the countries south of Maruss; Union of Barbaro, Doluv and Huil. It’s too dangerous to cross the Unresting Sea to attempt contact with the Sunix Islands.

For @homesteadchronicles tradition prompt!

Maruss is currently a little over two hundred years into the Fifth Monarchy, a monarchy that was born through rebellion onto an afterbirth of burning cities and countrysides. And any Marussian will tell you, it was for the country’s own good.

The worship of the Hearthsoul, a deity native to Maruss, has become the major religion in that time, promoted by the royal family themselves.

Every autumn, before the first snow, festivals to the Hearthsoul and less so other fire related deities are held. It is tradition to bring some kindling to one of the ceremonial pyres, imbue it with a wish and add it to the fire.
