While I don't believe Grimlock ever possessed the Matrix, he had a stint as leader of the Autobots in the Marvel comics in which he quickly turned into a vain tyrant, leading to Bumblebee/Goldbug and Blaster running away, upon which Grimlock branded them as traitors and had a torture device constructed to punish them. He also sentences a group of human children to death as a ploy to capture Blaster along the way. Eventually Optimus Prime came back and everything resolved itself.
