Stan Lee's death is a hard one. It's hard to take. It's hard to talk about. It's hard to think about. It's also hard to write about. No tribute I can write could possibly match how important and beloved a presence Stan Lee has been in my life, starting when I was about five years old. That's when my dad gave me my first Spider-Man comic. I read it so often, I memorized it. I kept that comic with me all the time, and I kept as careful care of it as a five-year-old child in a terrible home possibly could. I may not have been bit by a radioactive spider, or gained all sorts of unique abilities, but I did also have something that made me feel like a mutant. I was different from everyone around me, and I had to hide that difference as much as possible. With Spider-Man, Stan Lee taught me I wasn't broken, bad, freakish, or evil just because I had something that I was different. I just had a uniqueness, and I could still do cool things and help people. When I was 14, I met Stan Lee by accident. I ended up stuttering out, an "oh my shit, it's you." And then I was all embarrassed, because I just stuttered horribly and loudly at Stan Lee (of all people in the whole damn con) and cursed and was all rude.💫 . But, he laughed and was nice. And then told me to never apologize for that. He pointed out that it's not something I can even control, for one thing, and then said that "all of [his] favorite people are unique in some way." 💫 . And then he got a phone call, and I didn't know what to do, so I awkwardly waved and backed away.😂 . People have sometimes laughed because I love Marvel so much more than DC. But, Stan Lee shows us our differences make us special. (And he said his favorite people are unique, so...)💫 . I swear, it's like having a Nerd Grandpa pass.😥 . Thank you, Stan Lee. 🖤 .
