Like women they were ghosted by #Bigoted #victorian #Historians but as I write about the world’s first transgender celebrity Mal Frith - born #MaryFrith in 1585 & cocked-a-snook at all who judged her choice to be a man from aged 16 I am full of admiration ⚜️By 1610 Mal Frith was A household name throughout Europe & though the word transgender didn’t exist they were a growing force written about & sung about ⚜️In 1610 Famous playwrights wrote The #RoaringGirl a sellout play based on his life transgendering & Salons celebrated the mutability of gender in the #ModernAge⚜️ #Puritans wrote thousands of pages of diatribe against women living as men & burned them as witches ultimately triggering the Civil Wars ⚜️In 1642 Mal Frith the original Roaring Girl became a highwayman robbing #Puritan grandees including #GeneralFairfax & giving it to the Royalist army of #artists #poets & #LBGTQs ⚜️After 1649 #Cromwells Puritan Military Dictatorship’s #moral & racial-cleansing carried out genocides on #LGBTQs & #Irish #Scottish #Cornish & #Welsh #Celts slaughtering over 30% of the civilian population 😢Mal died in 1659 But #books plays, songs & #poetry continued to be written about him for the next 200 years ⚜️400 years later we need to remember & honour the sparkling bravery of Mal Frith & those he inspired for he claimed, demanded & fought for the right to be a man despite being born a girl!
