Witchy Woman, Mary Hrbacek

I discovered the motif for this image in a rustic park while visiting southern France. The tree form looks almost exactly like the drawing; it is very evocative of a witch and a man, in a fierce disagreement. That is at least my vision of the image in the digital photograph I took at the time. This is the sort of hybrid human-tree image that I have started to find at home in NYC parks, and in my travels. It is a little bit edgy or scary, with a dark vibe which appeals to my sense of adventure and mystery.

Entwined, Mary Hrbacek

The work was inspired by human-like or anthropomorphic, 400 year old sycamore trees I discovered in Viareggio Italy. By seeing my drawing, I hope the audience will expand their vision and experience of nature. I hope this realization will make them feel more at one with nature. I used charcoal in art school when I first learned to draw; the medium is suited for large scale very black images, which is what I enjoy creating as it enhances contrast with the white paper. I make semi-abstract images as I am not completely attuned to realism. I prefer to use a "representational" style which has many abstract elements.

Use Refuse, Mary Hrbacek

This work was inspired by a bronze leaf ball created by artist Liz McCue. I hope viewers will realize the complexity of the relationship between natural and found objects; I hope they will realize that man-made objects spoil nature but also that all objects have use and worth. They should be recycled if they are not wanted. I like sculpting and drawing with metal. I find leaves to be evocative subjects. there was a time when I drank coke often. I saved the cans to use in this sculpture as found objects.
