Bones says, "I'm a doctor, Jim. Not an invalid."
Jim takes her hand gently, his thumb rubbing the top of it like he knows she likes, as he guides her to a chair. "I know. But your my pregnant wife who is due any minute."
She huffs.
"Will you at least take it easy? Doctor M'benga's got this one."
She brings their entwined hands up to her forehead, presses against his knuckles. "I know. I just got worried-"
"You didn't need to be. I came back and Chekov only has some bruising. A successful away mission."
"Jim, you said that about the last away mission and the last one. The one where you were shot by a goddamn-" she winces as the baby kicks. "Lunatic."
Jim, so fine tuned to her every movement, jumps up. "Are you okay? Is it time? Do you need me to-"
She laughs, a happy sound. "No, you idiot. Jo kicked. Want to feel?" She grabs at his hand again and brings it to her swollen belly. His eyes light up.
She wants to leave the argument at that. But her captain husband shouldn't be going on potentially away missions, no matter if she's days away from delivering. How can she explain to him that she never thought that she could have a home again since Joss walked out on her? Never thought she would get a chance to start a family-even if that family is in space.
He sits down, once again sensing the shift in mood, hand still cradling her belly. She lets him be and nuzzles against him.
"Sorry, Bones. Just a little antsy. I'll keep the danger to a more acceptable level."
She grins against his temple. "You better. Me and the peanut need you."
He grins back at her and she can't imagine being happier. She wants to kick Frank, Winona Kirk, Joss, anyone who thought they wouldn't get here in the face. They deserve this. And she won't let it go, not for anything.
