Dinner at Masa Azul: 3.75 jujus
Friday dinner around Logan Square, we decided to try Masa Azul. We had been once and liked it and we are big fan of Zaragoza, where Jonathan's family make delicious goat.
Masa Azul has good tequila/mezcal cocktails and offers modern Mexican food, small plate style. It was fun and we liked the originality and the flavors, but we weren't entirely convinced. I think there is a very good potential but some of the techniques could have been better. The drinks were quite good and it was cheap overall (well, without the drinks!)
Ok, sorry the photo is terrible. This was a great cocktail though very spicy thanks to the Serrano pepper. At least, it forced me to sip it ;)
The first plate was a mackerel crudo, with some chicharon. I was really unimpressed, though it looked very pretty. I thought the fish didn't taste much and wasn't a fan of the flavors. 2.5 jujus.
The goat, the family specialty, was served with handmade tacos and was delicious. 4.5 stars.
The next dish was pork with potatoes. The flavors were great but I thought the pork was a little dry. 3.75 jujus.
The special of the day was Arctic Char with mushroom. the fish was perfect, but again, I didn't feel the mushrooms were adding much to it. 4 jujus.
Then we got the assortment of tacos. I really liked the avocado tempura one though it was not shared by everyone. The others were quite good too. 4 jujus.
We were still hungry (well I was fine, but the boys were hungry) so we got the pork belly which was pretty good.
And this very good huarache, 4.5 jujus.
Jonathan very kindly offered us desserts: a maracuya panna cotta and donuts with chocolate.
I loved the flavor of the panna cotta, but I thought the texture was slightly too thick: 4 jujus.
Last but not least, the donuts were awesome. They were super light and the chocolate sauce was very powerful. A great combination. Much better than the similar attempt we had at Two a few weeks ago.
