In 1797 Trinidad was captured as a crown of the colony and like the other Caribbean islands, the process of colonization began. With white elites from the French and British Community engaging in socialization processes, enslaved persons witnessed practices which they were prohibited to partake in because of their enslavement and imposed status as second class citizens. Of these practices was the period of feasting and feting between the period of Christmas and Lent. Martial Law would be imposed and would also be some of the earliest inspiration for African Masqueraders post emancipation. During this time, though unable to fully participate Africans enjoyed some measure of freedom as the atmosphere was more festive. The pre-emancipation carnival was characterized by whites dressing up as "negre jardin" /field negros and also re-enacting Cannes Brulees (Burning Canes) which was the practice of rounding up slaves to put out fires on the cane fields.This is similar to minstrels in the United States in the late19th century and into the 1900s.
