@Regranned from @wyntonmusic - #KnowYourArtist #Masekela #Legend This week the world woke up to the heart breaking news of the demise of the father of South African Jazz, Hugh Ramapolo Masekela. Masekela was a trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer, singer and activist. He showed musical ability at a young age and began singing and playing the piano as a child. Inspired by the movie "Young Man with a Horn", Masekela began to play the trumpet at the age of 14years, encouraged by anti-apartheid activist Father Trevor Huddleston, who helped him acquire the instrument. Huddleston requested Uncle Sauda, leader of the Johannesburg 'Native' Municipal Brass Band, to teach Masekela the rudiments of trumpet playing . He quickly mastered the instrument, inspiring some of his schoolmates to start playing, leading to the formation of the Huddleston Jazz Band – South Africa’s first youth orchestra. Masekela played music that closely reflected his life experience and vividly portraying the struggles, sorrows, joys and passion for his country. In 1961 he went into exile after the political unrest surrounding the 1960 Sharperville Massacre. He left his country in his twenties for London where he got admitted to the Guildhall School of Music. He also studied classical trumpet at Manhattan School of Music. Later, a renewed interest in his African roots led him to collaborate with West and Central African musicians such as Fella Kuti. Finally he returned to South Africa after Nelson Mandela's release from prison and end of the apartheid regime. His subsequent career has spanned over 5 decades, during which he released over 40 albums and worked with diverse artists such as The Byrds, Marvin Gaye, Herb Alpert, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and the late Miriam Makeba. He worn a number of awards like the MTV Africa Music Legend Award and got honoured by President Zuma with the order of Khamaga. He founded the Botswana International School of Music which gives local musicians of all ages and from all backgrounds the opportunity to play and perform together. Also he found the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation. Truly an icon has fallen but his music will remain alive in the hearts. (at Africa/Nairobi)
