People! can we acknowledge that this happened at a Mashrou Leila concert here in Egypt where you can get a life sentence for being gay? For those of you who don’t know, Mashrou Leila are a Lebanese indie band with the cutest lead singer who is completely out and proud. This is huge, multiple groups in the audience actually had an LGBT pride flag, this is the first time I’m aware of where pride flags have been flown in public here. Of course there’s been an ensuing shitstorm on social media and the actual media with people calling for the band to be banned from performing in Egypt again and bitching about “our traditions decaying and our religion forgotten and our kids corrupted” and your run of the mill conservative bullshit but what actually shocked me that about 5% of online commenters were actually defending gay rights, about 20% were like “I’m fine with gay people but do you have to pull that out at a concert?” Which, by middle Eastern standards, is -believe it or not- pretty good, and the rest were losing their shit, that’s a total of 25% who are at least willing to coexist somehow. There’s more of us than we think. Keep fighting, you are not alone.
