On the left, a simple model of the brain. On the right, #maslowshierarchyofneeds What's interesting is the comparison and analysis of these two images/ideas. Maslow's hierarchy makes great sense when we consider #statedependentfunctioning , meaning level of arousal dictates responses to environment (eg. when calm we think clearly/reflective, when fearful or terrified we are more reactive etc). What is important to know is that as arousal increases, we move away from the neocortex, into lower systems in the brain, reducing intelligence sorta speak, and accessing archived responses from the library in that part of the brain. It makes sense that when one is in a place of desperation such as homelessness or any other disruptive event, the first priority would be basic needs such as food and water. The brain and human body was programed for self preservation, for survival. The brainstem is called the reptilian brain. When feeling unsafe, our midbrain structures activate and influence of behavior (fight/flight/freeze). Esteem and belonging needs are directly related to the limbic system, we seek group affection and attention, we need love, and we need to give love. We are social, tribal creatures! Our brain has developed in such a remarkable way that our behaviors are a function of our cognitive/emotional state. At the very top of Marlow's pyramid, is #selfactualization, and this could be said to be a functional of the #neocortex This part which has executive functioning, higher mental processes and dreams about what you want to be when you grow up. If your goal, like mine, is to manifest your highest self, stay calm, breathe, stay at the top of your brain, master your physiology & psychology. Top down regulation is what you want more of in the modern world, and when under attack, pray you don't need to activate bottom up regulation. #maslowhierarchy #neurobiology #neurosequentialmodeloftherapeutics #brain #regulation #psychology
