Here's a thought
Recently I saw an article/blog thing that was criticising mass prayer events. It spoke of how they came across as hypocritical. For example some event in a stadium, or something, because Jesus says that people should pray privately and not so everyone can see them.
Well, I was thinking about that in light of mass prayer inside a church building, where we pray for people within our church. Is this different because we're not broadcasting it to others? Intention is what matters, right?
So, even for mass prayer events, if the intention is to actually reach out to God, regardless of what outsiders think then it shouldn't matter, right? For example, yesterday at church we [as a whole congregation] prayed for people who had put up prayer requests on my church's website. Our Senior Pastor said the prayer and we prayed with him. Is that wrong? I'd like to think not. Jesus said to pray in private and not to do it to show off. Well, we definitely weren't showing off. If the intention is more along the lines of "Look at me praying and doing good" and to show up people who aren't...like the religious leaders in Jesus' times, then of course that's not good, because it isn't about God, it's about the person. Prayer is important, and I don't really see why it matters HOW it's done as long as the reasons for it are selfless, not selfish.
