I understand that a card with meld can only meld with the actual partner card, and not a token or shapeshifter type copy of it. What I don't understand is, why? Hanweir Battlements for instance only asks for "a creature named Hanweir Garrison." The "melds with Hanweir Battlements" text on Hanweir Garrison is reminder text. It seems like a copy should work.

So that the game doesn’t break and both halves of the meld pair can be present.

Wizards just decided to avoid shenanigans and make it this way. Could it work otherwise? Sure, but it would cause problems so they didn’t do it.

Is it correct that all nonartificial creatures could fit into green because they're natural, but animals get printed in other colors because it would be imbalanced if they were all green?

Magic is better if animals aren't just a Green thing.
