4MASTIC BEACH, NY — It’s been almost six months since Mastic Beach resident Stephanie Gress’ beloved dog Max went missing — and she’s vowed never to give up looking for him until she brings him safely home.

Max, she said, has been missing since Aug. 30; she said she’s not sure how he got out of her Mastic Beach backyard. “We miss him terribly,” she said.

But she’s vowed to keep up the search.

A GoFundMe page, “Max Missing In Mastic Beach, NY” was created by Gress’ sister, Kathleen Gress-Bassett.

Max, a smaller black Lab mix, is three years old, weighs about 45 lbs., and is completely black from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail.

“Since that time, she has spent countless hours and money putting up posters,” and sending out alerts for her missing dog, Gress-Bassett said. “This is all a huge expense to keep putting up posters and flyers. Even though she loves her dog and will not stop looking for him in hopes of his safe return.”

Expenses include posters, flyers, alerts, Facebook ads, and costs to call, fax and contact animal hospitals and veterinarians’ offices, she said.

The goal, Gress said, is to have bigger and better quality posters made that will withstand the weather longer, and do a mass posting of them in Mastic Beach, Mastic and Shirley, hanging them in all the main areas and intersections as well as stores, banks and post offices.

“We are trying to get people who are not on social media to be aware that Max has a family that has been searching for him,” Gress said.

Her sister reflected on the heartbreak of losing Max: “Max means the world to Stephanie,” Gress Bassett said. “There is not a day that goes by that she is not looking for him, running with a lead or sighting, or checking an animal shelter to bring Max home where he belongs.”

Gress said her heart has been broken since her precious four-legged friend disappeared.

“Max is part of our family. Our dogs are our kids — we search for him every day, driving around town hoping to spot him. Follow every lead we receive, hang posters and talk to as many people as we can about him. Sometimes I am so overwhelmed with sadness I start to cry but then I pull myself together because crying isn’t going to bring him home,” she said.

Max, adopted at three months old, was part of a rescue from down south, Gress ssaid.

“We are heartbroken without him. Our older dog Cindy still looks for him every time we come home. She has stood on our back deck calling out to him — that is the most heartbreaking of all.”

But the support of friends and the community has meant everything, Gress said. “We have met so many wonderful people that keep a lookout for Max and have helped spread the word about him missing. The animal rescuers we have met are a great group of people with the biggest hearts. And through all of this we have come to realize what a wonderful and caring community we live in.”

And, she promised, “I won’t ever give up on Max.”
