I’m choosing to talk about Reddit. It’s design is, at first, a little bit difficult, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a really enjoyable site. The site is build by the community, so everything on the front page is based on popularity, or upvotes. Everything posted is by the users and there’s always something new. Sometimes a reposted gif or image will come around, but for the most part, there’s new, funny, interesting, or educational content. I wake up every morning not knowing what will be there. That’s what makes it unique. It’s not ran by advertisers, sure they load up on the side of the page, or a link to the product will pop up, but it’s highlighted a different color so you don’t click on it thinking it’s an actual article or story.
And the stories! There are subreddits dedicated to people just telling their story, from how they really messed up today (TIFU) to users needing relationship advice. There’s always original content on the site, and it’s not just status updates or useless information, you can look for whatever interests you. There’s car subreddits, instruments, old school pictures, news, memes, tv shows, anything. As long as others have an interest in DIY projects, there will be a relevant DIY sub.
I’m not entirely sure how the site was developed, but I think they made it based on other people submitting links and pictures that they find funny or interesting and it just took off from there. Recently, they’ve implemented their own video player that runs really well and makes using the site easier for videos.
Overall, I really love this site. They’ve heavily improved their mobile app, and it gets better and better everyday. I’m almost always on the site, waiting between classes, before bed, lunch time. I highly recommend it.
