So we were talking about Philippe’s pokemon for Les’ continued fic about the beloved My Son Snorkle and the idea came up for names
We, the sword guys, were asked if perhaps there was a Specific name for the offhand/seconday/backup sword/blade. (There isn’t we checked) in order to name Philippe’s skarmory.
Anyway so we all remember Corbeau’s katana right.
So during the Edo period of Japan the Tokugawa shogunate required samurai to wear Katana and another shorter sword in a pair, referred to as a daishō translated directly to mean a “big-little”. These other swords were most commonly the wakizashi, which were often used for close quarters fighting specifically. The daishō was highly specific to samurai’s and it represented their honor and social power.
So Philippe’s Skarmory is named zashi and Corbeau’s Scolipede is named daishō and they’re a bonded pair do not separate.
(Hello!!! Reminder that we are probably not 100% correct!! Our specialty is not Japanese swords! We are going off of the knowledge we already have and a few Google searches to make sure we aren’t saying anything glaringly wrong!
