Matchbox S2E5: Response and speculation (long post, I have SO MANY NOTES on this season)
WARNING: This post is full of notes and evidence making my case for who the Spark is this season. If that's something you want to work out for yourself, this probably isn't for you.
Damn, what an episode! Gecko claims to be the Medic - which, now that North is dead, can't be contested by any other player. This would most likely confirm that "Ears" was lying about his identity, and that's why 1: Gecko couldn't save him in the first round and 2: he found Gecko so fast when he was under the throne. "Ears" was watching Gecko scout the rooms for possible hiding spots.
But is he the Medic? North's insistence on Gecko having marked Rose in episode 3 could have been because he was the Medic, but it also could have been simple ignorance of the fact that Rose had encountered literally everyone. The only way to be sure is to check Gecko for Medic-like behavior. After all, if he's the Medic, he'll show a pattern of following people around with an open hand to sneakily protect them, right?
Which he does! We can see it in episode 1 when "Ears" is leading him around, and in episode 2 when he's hanging out with Rose. Assuming that saving someone doesn't trigger any kind of movement animation, there are multiple times in episode 1 when he could have marked "Ears" successfully. Not only that, but we see him get extremely close to Rose with an open hand in episode 3. Even if we acknowledge that we can't technically prove he was marking them to be saved, this would be a ridiculous pattern of behavior for anyone who wasn't the Spark (which he's not) or the Medic. It would simply put him in unnecessary danger of being seen acting suspiciously and accused of being the Spark.
Q.E.D., Gecko is the Medic. This, in turn, explains why he was quiet for most of the first meeting. Not only was he coming to grips with being lied to, but speaking up would either cast suspicion on himself (as the possible Spark) or force him to out himself as the Medic.
That just leaves the question of whether the Spark is Snake or Dice, and personally? My money's on Snake. If the Spark lied about his identity once, it'd make perfect sense for him to do it again - and very little sense for Dice to out himself when he wasn't under suspicion to begin with. Plus, Snake has been claiming to be in the library a ridiculous amount during this game - and in one of those matches, Gecko actually checked the library (admittedly, not very well) and didn't see him.
But if Snake was the Spark, and not the one arguing for using an arrow in the first round, who was it? Well, it doesn't matter for the purpose of the game, but my guess is Ears himself. Ears proposed the idea of lying about one's identity, and Snake ran with it, using the name of the person he'd marked to create an alibi for himself. Then at the end of the round, when Ears was dead, Snake - who had witnessed the argument between Knife and Ears - carried it on as if he'd been the one arguing with Knife. Kind of a weird move, but if we're figuring Snake as this kind of crafty mastermind who constantly spies and lies, it could be the kind of thing he would do.
But what if that's not the case? What if "Ears" was Dice? He could have met Ears outside the Library, learned his name, marked him, moved to the Library, glanced at the signs, seen Gecko enter, and moved on to greet him. However, if Dice is the Spark, lying about his identity in-game doesn't seem to be his MO. In fact, he seems to be terrible at subterfuge or even getting away with anything, having to resort to defending himself in meetings when Gecko keeps accusing him of being the Spark. That doesn't match any of what we saw with "Ears" in episode 1.
There's also one more thing worth looking at: who defended Gecko in episode 3. Remember, in episode 3, Gecko met with the Spark and made a deal with him before joining with Rose and North. When Rose revealed she'd been marked, North flew into an absolute panic blaming Gecko, until he was interrupted by one other player who proved that Gecko was innocent. And that player, of course, was Snake - seemingly protecting his brand new ally.
So yeah, if it wasn't obvious already, it's totally Snake. Now here's the real question: will Gecko figure it out?
Unlike in the first season, where our protagonist Oak was voted out, Gecko has already been proven innocent. He has also set up a plan to identify the Spark via civil means so that the innocent players can vote him out. This means that, if he wants to win the game, the Spark's only hope is to mark one of the innocent players.
Since the meeting will take place at three minutes until the end, the Spark has seven minutes to find and locate another player before then. This is a risky play, though, since he and Gecko each have a 50/50 chance of targeting the second innocent player. If he doesn't take this route, then he will have to mark Gecko during the meeting.
This might be exactly what Gecko's counting on. He's not usually much of a plans guy, but if you remember, he told two lies during that last meeting. The first was a lie of omission: he had picked up a second arrow, and did not disclose this to the others. The second lie helped that secret stay covered: he claimed that the Spark had shot at North, not him.
This makes it pretty obvious that Gecko is planning more than he lets on. Very likely, he's planning to use the sign with the supposed codeword to draw out the Spark while he's "distracted", or perhaps even to identify the innocent player instead of placing a codeword at all. Either way, it's clearly a setup.
But will it work? Hard to say. There are a lot of factors involved in a plan like this: speed, timing, aim, even luck. Plus, once they've identified the Spark, Gecko is going to have to avoid the Spark AND possibly protect the innocent player for the rest of the round. There's plenty that could go wrong... but there's plenty that could go right, too.
I suppose we will just have to see.
