GALTx eNews: Say Farewell To 2021 With A Matched Donation!

Let's send 2021 out with a bang by doubling your hound helping donations! Two families who recently adopted GALT Greyhounds have pledged $15,000 in matching funds for GALT's 2021 Holiday Matching Fund to double your donations made between now and December 31st at midnight central time. Donating to this fund is a "greyt" way to optimize your year-end charitable giving. With the match, a $25 donation becomes $50 and a $100 donation becomes $200! What a terrific way to help the hounds! If we raise $15,000 in donations for GALT's Holiday Matching Fund, we will meet the match raising a total of $30,000!

The past year has been quite challenging, to say the least. With your support, we effectively managed the second year of the pandemic, a devastating ice storm, and numerous unexpected capital expenditures. We have taken in a record number of hounds and provided them with extensive medical care and boarding. Our Adoption and Foster Coordinators, foster parents, volunteers and donors were critical to the success of our efforts. We truly appreciate the support you have all provided to help us continue our mission of “No Grey Turned Awaytm.”

GALTx eNews: Attention! Tune In To Help The Hounds!

Between hurricanes, news from Afghanistan, and a raging pandemic, we know you have a lot competing for your attention. But this is a special time for the GALT hounds and we really need you to tune in. North Texas Giving Day is coming up on September 23rd, 2021, and early giving is already open. During this special time, we have available $25,000 in matching funds to make your gift to the hounds go twice as far. Please don’t let this opportunity slip by with money still on the table.

Despite all of the turmoil in the world, GALT’s intake team remains busy. On August 9th, 2021, we welcomed 18 retired racers from Greyhound farms in Kansas and the next day we welcomed three more hounds who were abandoned in Amarillo. A couple of weeks later, we welcomed four more hounds (Joey, Jeff, Willa, and Christy) including both retired racers and rescues. This week, we have welcomed Maggie and Iris, from difficult situations discussed below. That’s 27 new hounds in just a few weeks. Our kennel remains full with more than 40 hounds awaiting foster homes and, ultimately, adoption.

Typically, a healthy retiring racer costs us about $750 in veterinary bills for examinations, vaccines, spay or neuter, dentals, micro-chipping, blood work and medications. Some hounds come to us with serious injuries, parasitic diseases and tick borne disease that can cost considerably more to remedy. For our recent 27 new arrivals, we anticipate more than $20,000 just in vet bills. And they won’t be the last hounds to join our family. GALTx eNews: The 2018 Holiday Matching Fund!

On November 2, 2018, Houn House notified GALT that it would cease boarding on January 1, 2019. William (Bill) and Mary Chaillot founded and built Hound House in 1969. Over the last 49 years, Houn House operated as a premier training and boarding facility in Carrollton, Texas, that generously helped many adoption organizations. GALT is proud to be among those organizations and has counted on Houn House as a key partner for boarding hounds awaiting foster homes since GALT’s inception in 2001. But, with Mary’s death in 2016, Bill took to “retirement” with his son Billy carrying on the business he and his family so loved. Unfortunately, in the last six months, Billy experienced health issues, leading to the imminent closure of Houn House. 

Just four days after we received notice of Houn House’s planned closure, Florida voted to end dog racing by December 2020. We were faced with losing a critical partner just when we needed it most and had to take swift action. GALT proposed to Houn House that GALT lease the entire facility, which can provide housing for up to 88 hounds at a time. Houn House agreed to a lease for at least a two year period. We are finalizing the details and the lease starts on January 1, 2019. We are fortunate that Buster Blankenship, a sixteen year Houn House employee, has agreed to stay on as a contract employee of GALT to care for our beloved greyhounds during their stays in boarding.  

Although January might seem early, we have already welcomed nine hounds displaced by the Florida Amendment and the timing was not entirely of our choosing. More hounds are on the way and now we will be ready for them. Leasing Houn House is a significant financial undertaking, and we know with your support, we can do it. To help us get a good start, an anonymous, generous donor has stepped up with $20,000 in matching funds available through the end of the year (December 31, 2018) and established our 2018 Holiday Matching Fund.
