Mateo was born in Tierra to mother Jolie Alvarez. His father was a stranger who assaulted his mother as she left work one evening. Despite his being born mute, Jolie called her son a beautiful blessing, and loved him unconditionally. Mateo was always a curious boy, who loved to explore and find out how things worked. He was often the victim of bullies but never let that, or his disability, get him down. When he was older, he found it difficult to get a job, as nobody wanted to hire a mute. His mother’s income as a prostitute to the wealthy villagers was not enough to sustain them, so Mateo began to look for alternatives. Although petty theft proved a successful money making scheme, it was never enough for him. He dreamed of having enough money that his mother, the most loving and compassionate woman he had ever seen, would never have to take money from the men in the village again. His opportunity presented itself when the pirate ship Youngblood lay anchor in Tierra for supplies. He rushed to greet it’s crew and communicated his wishes to join them.
Mateo served on board the Youngblood for the remainder of its voyage, working under the ship’s boatswain. A tragic incident in which a majority of the crew were lost, some dying while others simply abandoned ship, brought to life the truth of the ship’s captaincy, and Mateo was promoted to boatswain and a trusted member of the ship’s permanent crew.
Mateo acts as the crew’s eyes and ears. His keen senses allow him to spot deceipt or mischief from miles away, and his silence makes him sneaky. He has an intimate knowledge of every part of the ship, and he is exceptionally hardworking. He has a subtly sarcastic sense of humour and enjoys few things more than seeing people make fools of themselves. He gets along well with the crew’s core members, and is unwaveringly loyal to his captains and friends.
