Boarding the Queen Lilian
“As close as you can get, guys,” Gideon yelled to be heard over the sounds of action. His attention flicked from one member of his crew to the other, watching their progress as the ships drew closer and closer together.
The Captain of the Queen Lilian stood stock still, his eyes on the Youngblood as his own crew buzzed around him, conferring in hushed tones. He caught Gideon’s eye, dropping his gaze hastily as the pirate let his own drop pointedly to the manned cannons that lined the sloop’s deck.
“Short!” The Quartermaster called from where he stood by the rails, his hand resting on the tightly drawn grappling rope beside him. “If we get any closer to this thing, we’ll have to buy it dinner.”
“Good,” Gideon nodded, jumping down from the helm to join him. “She’s all yours, then.”
“Alright,” Akio grinned, rubbing his hands together and surveying the crew before him. “Boarding Group A, it’s your time to shine. Scotch, you’re my second. Let’s roll.”
Dylan slid down from where she sat perched on the gunwale, landing lightly on her feet and crossing the deck to join Akio where he stood assessing the distance between the two ships.
“I’ve got one question,” the imposing form of one of the Gunner’s Mates, a surly teen known only as Rivers, stood over them. His muscled arms were crossed over his chest, a scowl twisting his features. “Why’s she the second? Last I checked, she doesn’t outrank any of us.”
“Because,” Akio began patiently, even as he was climbing up onto the railing, testing his balance carefully. “She’s ten times smarter than the lot of you, and knows which end of a sword to hold.”
He made the jump look effortless, hitting the deck of the other ship in a roll that had him back on his feet in seconds. He turned back to face his own crew, planting his hands on his hips.
“I’ll give you a hint,” he offered, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “It’s not the pointy end.”
Dylan couldn’t hold back her laugh as she swung herself up onto the wall. She was the first to follow him over, treating the closest grappling line like a tightrope and crossing the distance in a few graceful steps. She ignored the grumbling of her crew mates, trusting them to know to follow and spread themselves out across the Queen’s deck, as she joined the Quartermaster where he was facing off against the naval captain.
“Afternoon, Sir,” Akio greeted cheerfully, leaning comfortably against the mast. “I trust you’re having a pleasant day. Well, I trust you were until now, that is.”
“If you think you can intimidate us, Pirate,” the Captain spat out the word like it burned him to form it on his tongue, “You are gravely mistaken. We have allowed you to board our ship, but do not for one moment think we will allow your insubordination.”
“Allowed us,” Akio laughed loudly, his hand slapping against his thigh. It stayed there, hovering casually by the blade at his hip. The Captain’s eyes lingered there too for just a moment, before he narrowed them once again in the pirates’ direction. “You’re a classic, Cap. Now, you did say you weren’t going to do anything stupid here, and I know we’re all men of our word here.” He glanced to his companion and added, “Ah, sorry Scotch.”
Dylan only rolled her eyes. While half of her attention was on the conversation at hand, the other half roamed the ship, taking note of its layout and inhabitants. It drifted over to her own ship, where she caught the gaze of her brother.
Gideon gave her a thumbs-up, and Dylan let her hand fall onto the hilt of her cutlass, her fingers tapping impatiently against the leather grip.
Gideon scanned the deck to locate the Gunners.
“You better have them covered here, Carroway,” he warned, addressing the dark haired boy who leant against the railings with a musket resting comfortably in his hands. West responded with a silent salute, not taking his eyes off the other ship.
“So, Cap,” Akio was saying conversationally, “Where do you keep the good stuff around here?”
“I beg your pardon?” a wave of red hot anger rose up the Captain’s neck, colouring his round cheeks.
“Your cargo, Captain,” Akio sighed, taking a step forward. The Captain and his officers took a large step back in response. “As much as I’m loving this back and forth we’ve got going, it’s really not what we came for. So, if you’d be so kind as to show us to your cargo, we’ll be on our way.”
“I will do no such thing,” the Captain declared. “We will not-”
He trailed off with a sharp breath as Dylan pulled her blade free. She kept it by her side, swinging idly back and forth. The officers eyed it warily, sizing her up.
“You know what you’re doing with that, little lady?” the helmsman scoffed, pulling himself up to his full height.
Dylan arched the cutlass upwards so quickly that the officer barely had time to be surprised before its tip rested against his adam’s apple. She held it steady, smiling sweetly and asking, “Would you like to find out?”
Just one quick question... WHY DID I MAKE CHARACTERS WITH ALIASES AND SECRET NAMES AND BLEUGH why do I make life so confusing for myself hahaha
95% of the time you will find West with a ball of some sort in his hand. He just pulls one out of his pocket/thin air mid conversation and starts tossing it around absently. It frustrates Gideon to no end and when West isn't paying attention he secretly drops it overboard and is super happy with himself for ten minutes until he sees him pull out a different one and he's just like "ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?"
When I think about my girl Dylan I always think about those posts about asexual Charlie Weasley that are like when the others are talking about girls and he's just like but guys... DRAGONS! Like fk that is? So Dylan? Gideon is like "wow girls! Right?" And Akio is like "everyone is hot I need to kiss them all" and Dylan is just like "okay that's great but I just heard about this sea creature nobody has ever seen it and survived but apparently it sucks the flesh right off people's bones isn't that so cool?! Right guys?!" And they're just like okay Dylan sure thing
So the Youngblood colour is red (the crew are almost always wearing at least a bit of red) and the Royal is blue.... Why are they turning into the bloods and crips lmao
Recruitment Fair (Part 2)
The bar was crowded, people jostling to keep both their position and the attention of the barkeeps for more than a few seconds. At the far end of the bar, a young girl sat on a stool. She twirled the paper umbrella from her drink between her fingers, her other hand holding up her chin as she surveyed the room.
She was perfectly aware she was attracting the attention of most of the tavern’s patrons. The group of young recruits further down the bar, in particular, were watching her intently, entranced by the pale skin that lined the red silk of her tightly laced bodice, the dark hair that slid over her shoulders as she tilted her head. She gave them a small smile, invitation enough for the bravest of the pack to break away and come towards her.
“Hi there,” the taller of the two said, flashing her a charming smile. “I’m Nathaniel, and my friend here is Charles. What do they call you, gorgeous?”
“Yeah, that usually,” the girl teased. She was turned away from them, her legs crossed under the bar, and spared them only a glance over her shoulder.
“You’re from Doriam?” Nathaniel asked, noticing her accent. The girl shrugged one shoulder, giving him a small smile around her straw.
“So, what’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?” the other boy, Charles, leant against the bar beside her.
The girl laughed suddenly, spinning on her stool to face them and tossing back her hair.
“Are you kidding?” She leant forward, smiling conspiratorially. “This is the highlight of my year. What’s more thrilling than terrifying pirates in a dank old tavern? No offence,” she threw over her shoulder to the bartender, who only shrugged as if to say that he couldn’t agree more. Turning back to her audience, she gave them an appraising look. “Are you pirates?”
The two recruits exchanged a look, grinning and pulling themselves up to stand even taller.
“We will be after tonight,” Charles said, and she was sure he was puffing out his chest. “The only question is which ship we’ll choose, you know? I mean, we’re getting offers from the best crews, so it’s going to be a tough choice.”
“The best crews?” The girl asked curiously. “Which ones are those?”
Nathaniel pulled up a stool of his own, positioning himself close enough to the girl that their knees touched and leaning towards her.
“Easy,” he shrugged. “The Royal and the Youngblood. See, the Youngblood is notorious; the crew goes on all sorts of crazy, impossible voyages. People call them the most terrifying to ever sail these seas.”
The girl’s dark eyebrows rose, making him nod solemnly.
“The ship is captained by these brothers; Dylan and Gideon Young. Nasty bastards if there ever were. They’re completely ruthless.”
“Rumours say,” Charles cut in, “That they only recruit teenagers, because they know there’s a chance their whole crew will cark it, and they think kids will be more replaceable.”
“Rumours?”
“Well yeah,” Nathaniel said animatedly. “That’s the best thing about them, right? Everything anyone knows about them is just rumour. They’re recluses. Nobody’s actually met them.”
“Nobody?” the girl asked sceptically.
“Their first mate,” Charles jerked his head towards one of the tables lining the tavern’s walls, where a teenage boy sat twirling a quill between his fingers. “They say he’s the only one they’ll talk to. Even when the ship’s at sea, they stay in their cabin and refuse to be disturbed. But the one thing anyone knows for sure is that they burn through crews faster than any other ship.”
“And you still want to join?”
“Obviously.”
“Well, what about that other ship,” she said casually, changing the subject. “The Royal, wasn’t it? What’s so special about that one?”
“The Royal’s a joke.”
Nathaniel and Charles spun sharply to face the teenager that sat on the stool just behind them, a half-empty pint dangling loosely from two of his fingers. He grinned lazily at them, ignoring the scowl etched across Nathaniel’s face.
“The Royal is a joke,” the boy repeated with a shrug. Tendrils of black hair had escaped the strip of red leather he’d tied around his half-hearted ponytail, falling into his face. He blew them away and downed the rest of his drink before he continued. “I mean, sure, they might be the richest crew here, but they make up for it by also being the biggest bunch of royalist piss babies to pollute the seas. But, then again, I guess if money is what you’re in it for, that’s probably a fair trade.”
“Getting rich is the whole point of this business,” Charles said scathingly, inching further away from where the boy sat.
“Is that it?” the dark hair boy laughed lightly. “And here I thought it was about adventure; the experience, you know. I’ll have to let the crew know we’ve been doing it wrong.”
“You’re in a crew?” Nathaniel said, looking the boy over pointedly. “What? Someone was actually desperate enough to recruit somebody like you?”
Had they not had their backs to her, they might have seen the girl’s hand bunch tightly in the fabric of her skirt, seen her lips set into a tight line.
“You know, for someone so set on getting the golden ticket here,” she observed, making them turn back to face her. Although ice crept into her tone, she was the picture of cheerfulness. “You’re spending a lot of time over here. Shouldn’t you be getting along, schmoozing up to the captains or something?”
The boy snorted with laughter, pressing his hand to his mouth. Sensing the hint, Nathaniel pulled back in surprise. The girl just smiled up at him, swirling the rest of her drink.
“You’re right,” Nathaniel shrugged, composure regained. He looked back to the boy, contempt spelled clearly on his face. “We can’t all be so lucky as to already be part of a crew, can we?”
“Good luck,” the girl called after the recruits as they walked off, grinning at the boy as he shook his head in amusement.
They watched the recruits go, following their progress as they moved through the crowd. The boy turned back to the bar with a sigh, eyeing his empty glass.
“Hey, bar guy,” he called out. The bartender looked up, throwing a rag over his shoulder and coming towards them. “Can I get another drink?”
“Can I get some ID?” the barkeep asked. He was young himself, his tanned, youthful face framed by thick, light hair. He pulled the boy’s glass towards him, tucking it under his right arm before picking up the girl’s with the same hand. His left arm stayed by his side the whole time, drawing the girl’s attention down its length to his wrist, where it tapered off into a smooth stump.
“Ah, sorry mate,” the boy patted down his pockets, shrugging, “Other pants, you know?”
“Are you 21?”
The boy only smiled, and the bartender scoffed, turning away from them.
“Oh come on,” the boy slapped his palm against the bar top. “This place is literally crawling with pirates, and you’ve chosen to crusade against underage drinking? What has the world come to?”
“Give it a rest, West,” the girl sighed, moving over to the seat beside the boy. “I think you’ve had enough.”
West looked as though the suggestion genuinely offended him.
The Recruitment Fair (Part 1)
Two boys wove through the rowdy crowd that filled the cramped space between the tables, using their size to navigate the smaller gaps between bulky forms and flying elbows. Kip Johnson wasn’t the youngest patron in the tavern at that moment, but he was likely the smallest; his blonde hair barely reached the waists of the men that surrounded him.
“Stop twitching,” Kip hissed, elbowing his companion in the side. “We’re trying to make a good impression.”
“I know,” the other boy nodded, his head bobbing sharply. He put his shoulders back further, but couldn’t seem to stop wringing his hands. He was painfully aware of the way his glasses kept slipping down his sweat slicked nose. “It’s just… what if someone we know is here? What if they see us and go back home and tell our parents or the enforcer or the king or-”
“It won’t matter,” Kip said with a dismissive wave of his hand. He was up on his toes, trying to see over heads and around shoulders. A large, bearded man pushed past, his elbow roughly knocking into Kip’s back. “By the time they got back, we’d be on a ship in a middle of the ocean, and out of their reach. Now shut it, I’m studying.”
Studying, to Kip, meant planting his hands on his hips and staring down each table in front of them. He’d always been a strong believer in destiny, and it was destiny that he would let choose their ship. He was focusing his gaze, a laser beam of attention, when another arm collided with his back, knocking the wind out of him and sending him falling forwards to hit the ground.
Alexander was right there, pulling him up before anyone had the chance to trample him, just as best friends should do. Kip came to his feet, in one piece and largely unbothered, in front of a recruitment table. It wasn’t fate’s usual method, granted, but he wasn’t going to question it.
The boy sitting behind the table had to have been almost thirty years younger than either of the recruiters that flanked him, with a handsome, youthful face and long legs that he had propped up on the table. He was leaning back in his chair, shaggy brown hair falling into his closed eyes, but he snapped to attention before Kip could get out a word.
“Can I help you?” The boy leant forward, folding his legs under the table and sitting upright.
“We want to sign up,” Kip said confidently, crossing his arms and pulling himself up taller. The boy at the table smiled slightly, the corners of his mouth barely lifting before he composed himself again.
“Why would you want to do that, Mr…”
“Johnson,” Kip supplied. “Christopher Johnson, and my companion is Alexander Kane. We’re from Soul, just West of here.”
“I see,” the recruiter nodded seriously. “And why do you want to be pirates, Christopher Johnson and Alexander Kane?”
“Because Soul’s dead boring and dead freezing and we want to have adventures and die doing something illegal,” Kip recited. He’d said this so many times, to himself and Alex and anybody who would listen.
The recruiter stayed silent, his expression unreadable. Kip took the opportunity to glance at the board over his head. The same sign was tacked up on the wall behind each table, listing that ship’s name and captain.
“The Youngblood,” Alexander read quietly beside him. The colour had left his face, leaving his usually rich skin a sickly white. “Y-you sail under the Young Brothers?”
“You’ve heard of them?” The pirate boy grinned openly now, leaning his elbows on the table in front of him. Alex blanched at the address. The pirate turned his attention back to Kip, looking him over appraisingly. “And do you think you’ve got what it takes to serve under them? You’re pretty small. How old are you?”
“I’m fourteen,” Kip said, a little defensively. “And I might be small, but I’m fast. I’m the fastest in Soul, and the best climber. And Alex is the smartest person in this place, guaranteed. I know we can do it.”
So, I’ve actually been writing (gasp, I know) trying to solidify my ideas about this damn story. I’m just taking it one part at a time, writing snippets as the ideas come to me. Nothing is particularly good at this point, some serious thought and editing and improvement is needed obviously. Anyway, I’m going to post some snippets here to keep track of everything. Just so you know haha.
Jonas Till
Species: Human Gender: Male Age: 19 Kingdom of origin: Little Felle Kingdom of residence: Nomadic (previously Felle) Family: Parents Gwen and Theo Till Occupation: Cook on the Youngblood Appearance: Average height, sandy brown hair, brown eyes, average build, left arm amputated above the wrist. Jonas is the only child of parents Gwen and Theo Till. He was born in Little Felle, where his parents owned a large farm and made a living selling milk in the surrounding villages. Jonas was an intelligent and inquisitive boy who loved the space and the animals of the farm. When Jonas was twelve years old, an accident with a piece of farm equipment left him with only one hand. While this was a minor blow to such an optimistic and imaginative child, his parents were devastated that he could no longer help them efficiently on the farm. Under the guise of a family trip, the Tills crossed the border into the south of Felle. They left their son here, disappearing and returning to their home Kingdom one day while he was out exploring the village. Left alone in a strange Kingdom, Jonas kept himself alive by begging and stealing what he could, taking refuge on the street and in shelters at night. It was in one of these shelters that he met Mira Bennet, a shy, friendless orphan girl who volunteered serving meals to the homeless. Jonas befriended Mira and the two became incredibly close. They later got jobs working together at a pub by the Southern ports. they were working the night of a piracy recruitment fair, where Jonas got talking to members of the crew and formulated a brilliant plan. Using his charm and positive attitude, he talked the crew of the Youngblood into taking on both himself and Mira as their cooks, and they set sail the very next day. Jonas is a ray of sunshine on board. He is eternally optimistic and positive, seemingly unbothered by anything. He enjoys his job, often whistling and singing while he cooks. He remains close with Mira, supporting and encouraging her as they embark on new adventures together. Jonas doesn't let his disability get in his way, and is an expert at doing just about everything one handed - and when he can't he's always got Mira there to lend him a hand (pun intended). Jonas is incredibly loyal, and forges sincere bonds with everyone on the crew. He gets along with everyone in unique ways and insists on getting to know everyone personally.
Kingdom Reference
So each of the kingdoms sort of roughly corresponds with a country, region or area in our world. I'm sort of drawing inspirations of language and culture to make each kingdom sort of unique you feel? I'll add to this list as different kingdoms come up I guess? Felle is America, Little Felle is a sort of less developed Western Kingdom off of Felle, and the different Native Fellon reservations and tribes are like Native Americans I guess? Tierra is like Mexico Doriam is the UK, more specifically England Ai is Japan a couple of different kingdoms make up Africa, with each sort of kind of roughly corresponding to a different region made up of multiple countries, the part of Dhul where GHEDI is from is closest in resemblance to Somalia
Mira Bennet
Species: Human/Mermaid Gender: Female Age: 17 Kingdom of origin: Felle Kingdom of residence: Nomadic Occupation: Cook on the Youngblood Appearance: Porcelain pale skin, dark red hair, amber eyes, pale bluey-green discolouration up her arms and legs
Mira’s birthplace and parentage is unknown. She was left on the doorstep of an orphanage in Southern Felle when she was only days old. She was a small, sickly infant, nursed to health by the orphanage’s nuns. She was quiet, mostly keeping to herself so the other children had less opportunities to pick on her. She was born with a strange defect, a bluey-green colouring to her skin that stretched up her arms and legs. The nuns and local medical men had no idea what it was, assuming it to be some sort of skin disorder and leaving it alone. Mira was a compassionate, kind hearted girl, which led her to volunteer for the church throughout her teenage years. She had a passion for helping people that overcame all the cruelty she was shown by others. She volunteered weekly in the village’s homeless shelter, making and serving meals to those who had nothing. Here she met a boy names Jonas, who had been abandoned by his family and left completely alone. Jonas, seeing that Mira was shy and friendless, seemed determined to befriend her. He came back every week, hanging around the kitchen and talking to her. Soon enough he was helping her in the kitchen, entertaining her with his stories as they worked, and the two became the closest of friends. It was Jonas that told her of the mermaids that lived in the Tybalt Sea and their secret affairs with human men, sure that he has uncovered the truth of Mira’s heritage. Surely, there was no other explanation for her strange skin, beautiful singing voice, and ability to hold her breath underwater for impossible lengths of time. Jonas got them both jobs at a nearby port side tavern, working in the kitchen at night. They were both working the night of a piracy recruitment fair, where Jonas got talking to the crews and got it into his head that they belonged at sea. Despite Mira’s protest, he charmed his way into an invitation to join the crew of the infamous Youngblood. It took much convincing, but he wore Mira down with promises of adventure and excitement, and they set sail the very next day.
Mira is a hard and skilful worker, taking pride in everything that she created and served. She was overwhelmed and intimidated by the ship and crew, but had Jonas there as support every step of the way. Mira’s strength is hidden, coming out when it is least expected and surprising everyone. She is always worried that someone will uncover her secret, always wearing gloves while on land and claiming a genetic skin condition amongst the crew.
West Carroway
Species: Human Gender: Male Age: 19 Kingdom of origin: Felle Kingdom of residence: Nomadic Family: Parents Peia and Johan Carroway (deceased), Brother Will Carroway (deceased) Occupation: Master gunner of the Youngblood Appearance: Tall, medium skin tone, toned, black hair, darkest brown eyes West was the youngest son of Peia and Johan Carroway, born in a Native Fellon reservation village. He was a shy and easily pleased child who adored his older brother Will to the point of worship. West was an imaginative child who loved making up thrilling stories where he and Will were the heroes. When West was 10, his parents and brother were killed in a hate crime on their way home from a school awards ceremony in a nearby village. West was put into the care of a reservation orphanage run by a religious Fellon organisation. Although he was absolutely miserable there, West formed a friendship with a younger boy named Mika, and adopted a big brother position like the one Will had held for him. At the age of 17, West put in place his masterpiece plan. With Mika in tow, he snuck out of the orphanage one night and hitchhiked to the nearest port, hoping to stow away on a ship and figure out their next step when they hit land. Once there, however, the only ship boarding was that of a crew of pirates headed on a pillaging voyage. Blending in with the flow of haggard teenagers, the two boys found themselves on board. They were discovered hours later by the First Mate, who only laughed and welcomed them on board. Finding the pirate's life to suit them nicely, West and Mika elected to remain on board and see out the voyage. When they reached the Youngblood's target island however, an attack by its savage natives resulted in the deaths of half their crew, Mika among them. While the rest of the crew abandoned the Youngblood immediately out of fear, West knew he had nowhere else to go and requested to remain on board. West is a very laid back, often lazy crew member. He enjoys his job as master gunner because he only has to work if and when they get into a fight. He is opinionated, but won't get into an argument unless he knows for sure that he'll win it. West exudes confidence, verging on insufferable arrogance at times. He rubs some members of the crew the wrong way, especially Gideon, but gets along well with Dylan. It's possible that West's devil-may-care attitude is all an act, covering up his sensitivity and affection for his crew, and the lasting impact of Mika's death. The one time anyone sees him jump into action without complaining is when one of his team, especially it's younger members, is in trouble.
Mateo Alvarez
Species: Human Gender: Male Age: 18 Kingdom of origin: Tierra Kingdom of residence: Nomadic Family: Mother Jolie Alvarez, father unknown Occupation: Boatswain of the Youngblood Appearance: Average height, wiry build, medium skin tone, dark hair, light eyes, scar stretching from jaw to collarbone
Mateo was born in Tierra to mother Jolie Alvarez. His father was a stranger who assaulted his mother as she left work one evening. Despite his being born mute, Jolie called her son a beautiful blessing, and loved him unconditionally. Mateo was always a curious boy, who loved to explore and find out how things worked. He was often the victim of bullies but never let that, or his disability, get him down. When he was older, he found it difficult to get a job, as nobody wanted to hire a mute. His mother’s income as a prostitute to the wealthy villagers was not enough to sustain them, so Mateo began to look for alternatives. Although petty theft proved a successful money making scheme, it was never enough for him. He dreamed of having enough money that his mother, the most loving and compassionate woman he had ever seen, would never have to take money from the men in the village again. His opportunity presented itself when the pirate ship Youngblood lay anchor in Tierra for supplies. He rushed to greet it’s crew and communicated his wishes to join them. Mateo served on board the Youngblood for the remainder of its voyage, working under the ship’s boatswain. A tragic incident in which a majority of the crew were lost, some dying while others simply abandoned ship, brought to life the truth of the ship’s captaincy, and Mateo was promoted to boatswain and a trusted member of the ship’s permanent crew.
Mateo acts as the crew’s eyes and ears. His keen senses allow him to spot deceipt or mischief from miles away, and his silence makes him sneaky. He has an intimate knowledge of every part of the ship, and he is exceptionally hardworking. He has a subtly sarcastic sense of humour and enjoys few things more than seeing people make fools of themselves. He gets along well with the crew’s core members, and is unwaveringly loyal to his captains and friends.
Alexander Kane
Species: Human Gender: Male Age: 16 Kingdom of origin: Tierra Kingdom of residence: Nomadic (previously Felle) Family: Parents Hilda Kane (deceased) and Paolo Benitez (incarcerated), grandmother Estela Benitez Occupation: Coxswain of the Youngblood Appearance: Short, stocky, medium skin tone, curly brown hair, glasses, freckles Alexander Kane is the only son of Hilda Kane and Paolo Benitez. Alexander was born to his unwed parents in his father's homeland of Tierra, but moved to Felle with his mother, father and paternal grandmother at the age of one. Alexander was a very bright child, showing signs of outstanding intelligence from an early age. As a child, Alex was doted on by his adoring mother, while he received a more disciplined style of parenting from his often absent father. Alex was never particularly social, as his nervous and sensitive disposition made it difficult for him to make friends, but became very close with another local boy, Kip Johnson, at the age of five. The two remained friends as they grew up, and Kip encouraged Alex to step out of his comfort zone and pursue adventure. When Alex was eleven years old, his mother committed suicide, leaving him in the care of his father until he was thirteen, at which point Paolo was arrested for the murder of a local stable boy and sent to a maximum security gaol in Doriam. From thirteen onwards, Alex was raised by his grandmother - a stoic and senile woman who, although reserved, cared deeply for her grandson. Alex spent his early teen years reading everything he could get his hands on and pursued an interest in astrology. At the age of 16, perhaps spurred on by his grandmother's oft repeated advice of "Don't you dare settle, Alexander", Alex joined his friend Kip on a journey to Felle's Southern ports, and to the piracy recruitment fairs that were held there. Alex secured a position as coxswain beside Kip on the infamous Youngblood, sailing under the (not as terrifying as expected) Captains Young. Alex is the resident ship brainiac. His high intelligence and photographic memory allow him to pull facts and figures seemingly from thin air, which comes in handy in a crisis. He is very shy, and often feels uncomfortable in the close social order of the ship, but pushes himself to move past it as he really enjoys being a part of the crew. His closest friendship is still with Kip, whose outgoing and confident personality balances with Alex's more reserved nature, and he often finds himself caught up in Kip's crazy schemes (and the trouble that follows). Despite his nerves and reservations, among the core crew Alex has found a place where he is liked and appreciated for the parts of him that others had always teased him for, and he doesn't think he'll ever stop being grateful for that.
OMG so I just found this and this was when I first made up these characters like I was really bored one night and I started messing around on this character generator and I gave them names and a half story. This is before I added Jonas and West and changed some of their names and most of them don’t even look like this in my head anymore (especially Mateo wow) but it’s pretty cool to look back at anyway. So basically it’s my original concept of (from left to right) Mira, Alex, Akio (w boobs???), Gideon, Dylan, Kip, Ghedi and Mateo. They all look like babies!
