#math 104

I haven't taken Calculus 12 and am currently registered in MATH 104. I called the math department and they said I can still take it without Calc 12. I have the choice for registering in MATH 184 waitlist but the times fit very poorly on my schedule and its not guaranteed, so I was wondering is the main difference between MATH 104 and MATH 184 only the extra 1.5 hour workshop? Do both courses go at similar paces? Because then I think I can just practice more on my own or ask for help ....

MATH 104 assumes all students are familiar with Calculus 12 so they go a bit quicker in the beginning while MATH 184 students are not familiar with Calculus 12 so the professors spend more time going through basics. The two courses end up writing the same final exam at the end.

For math, do they scale the marks so that each section has similar averages? In this case, would I benefit more if I was in MATH 184 than MATH 104 since I have already taken Calculus 12? (I asked the first year advisor and she said that anyone that has taken Calc 12 can also take MATH 184)

They do try to do that, but it’s not guaranteed. If finances isn’t an issue and you can fit in an extra workshop then MATH 184 isn’t a bad choice.

Honestly, what is the difference between MATH 102 and 103 and 104 and 105. I know that math 102/103 have applications to life sciences and 104/105 has applications to social sciences and commerce. How are they different in terms of difficulty. I'm planning on pursuing med school however, I'm not very strong in math and because they are all equivalent to each other, should I just take 104/105 because I heard that its generally easier, or is that just a lie? Thanks!

I don’t know how different all the maths are exactly because I’ve only ever taken one of each and only know about their grades, which are available on UBC PAIR grades. 

You can use PAIR to see the past averages of the past years to help you better determine which MATH you want to take. 

In general, I’ve also heard that Math 104/105 are easier…but again, this is based on grades because I don’t know anyone who has personally taken BOTH 102&104, 103&105 to give a more detail, accurate comparison.

Okay thanks! Do we need to understand any economic/ business concepts in Math 104/105? (Also I noticed they no longer have the extra lab section in math 102/ 103)

Yes, you do have to understand a bit, my friend who was in Biology with me took Math 184/105 and said there were a few times where she had trouble understanding the material in class because she wasn’t familiar with some of the applications. That being said, I don’t think it’ll be a huge detriment.

Is MATH 104/105 still considered the easier math since I heard they made it harder now? Im entering science first year and I am HORRIBLE at math

You might be good at calculus, you’ll never know until you try! ;P 

Yes, I’ve heard at least Math 104 is still considered the “easiest”, but the curriculum for Math 105 has changed, so there are mixed reviews! 

FYI: You don’t have to do the two as a pair, you could always mix it up haha.

Hello, if I were to take Math 104 and Math 105 would those two courses meet the computational requirement? Also, I'm really bad at math (my worst subject) so I was thinking of taking it in the summer of first year so I can focus on it more. Would I still be able to major in psych or bio second year or do they expect me to take both math courses in our winter session? (I'm confused because everyone I ask took both math courses during their winter session of first year) Thanks!

Yes, both Math 104 and Math 105 would be counted towards the computational requirements (please note that you will need 3 more credits, for a minimum of 9, to complete the requirements ).

As long as you complete the pre-reqs for entry into Psych or Bio by April of your first year, you can be evaluated for admission in those programs!

My friend who is also in Biology took Math 105 the summer after first year and she was fine! 

Most people take them both during the winter session just to get them over with! You may also want to make sure that you're meeting promotion requirements.

If i buy a Math 104 textbook does it come with a solution manual. I looked on my booklist and it doesnt list whether to buy a solutions manual

I don’t think there is one, if there is the option of purchasing a solutions manual, the booklist will have it there!
