I was inspired by the news of the newly discovered scutoid shape in cells of epitelial tissue in nature, and after I saw the excellent Youtube video by Standup Maths about it, I decided to design a set of jewelry that used the unique packing properties of this shape.

I’ve designed a ring that stacks with itself, so you can wear two that fit together perfectly; two different pendants (1, 2) that fit together so you and your partner can both wear one; and a set of earrings of which the two halves pack together.

George Boole: A 200-Year View

Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Boole. In our modern digital world, we’re always hearing about “Boolean variables”—1 or 0, true or false. And one might think, “What a trivial idea! Why did someone even explicitly need to invent it?” But as is so often the case, there’s a deeper story—for Boolean variables were really just a side effect of an important intellectual advance that George Boole made.

When George Boole came onto the scene, the disciplines of logic and mathematics had developed quite separately for more than 2000 years. And George Boole’s great achievement was to show how to bring them together, through the concept of what’s now called Boolean algebra. And in doing so he effectively created the field of mathematical logic, and set the stage for the long series of developments that led for example to universal computation.

When George Boole invented Boolean algebra, his basic goal was to find a set of mathematical axioms that could reproduce the classical results of logic. His starting point was ordinary algebra, with variables like x and y, and operations like addition and multiplication.

At first, ordinary algebra seems a lot like logic. After all, p and q is the same as q and p, just as p×q = q×p. But if one looks in more detail, there are differences. Like p×p = p2, but p and p is just p. Somewhat confusingly, Boole used the notation of standard algebra, but added special rules to create an axiom system that he then showed could reproduce all the usual results of logic.

Aristotle defined mathematics as “the science of quantity,” and this definition prevailed until the 18th century.  I’m no Math wizard but what I like about Math is that it is exact.  Whether we are in the Northern, Southern, Eastern or Western part of the globe, 1 + 1 is always 2.  It will never be 3 or 6 or 100. It will always be 2.Math is safe. There is always a right answer even if it was imaginary. But then again, there is an equation where Math does not hold up. Like, there are some factors that lead to the breaking of hearts, deaths of hope, and the tearing of lives. There are some equations and factors where mathematics do not add up at all. Unlike mathematical problems, there are some questions we don’t get answers for. And there are also some questions that we don’t even get the truth for.

There is simply no mathematics to love and loss.

If anyone doubts how stupid math made me feel, let me tell you a story.

In my final year of high school I opted not to take Mathematics (it was only mandatory until grade 11). I knew I should have taken it because you do need it if you're pursuing science as a career.

But I didn't take it. That year was the first year in my life I actually felt smart.  I got on the first class honour role (A and B average) twice.

Even though every year I got high grades in most of my classes, because math was ultimately seen as a sign of intelligence in this culture, I felt stupid. It makes me mad now how I let a letter grade define what I thought of myself.

I did end up taking that math course later at a community college (along with several others I would need to study chemistry).
