Why had Sammael fled here, of all places?

Rand ducked around a ruined building, keeping an eye out for the deadly fog of Shadar Logoth. He’d felt Sammael only a few moments ago when they’d both arrived in the city, and knew that the man couldn't be far.

If he was lucky, perhaps the fog would take care of Sammael for him.

A selfish thought.

Still, Rand couldn't like killing, no matter how necessary it might be.

Their next step — after Rand finally talked things out with Elayne and Aviendha — would be to search out Perrin and find why he hadn’t already returned with Masema. Rand had been fretting over it but hadn’t had any plans to seek Perrin out himself, believing that he needed to keep his focus on the Seanchan. Seemed a bit of nonsense, to Mat’s thoughts. They had these odd color swirls when they thought of each other for a reason. Might as well use them to track Perrin down and find out what was keeping him.

Luckily, Rand did seem at least somewhat willing to listen to Mat’s advice.

It was also easier to wrangle Rand back to Caemlyn than Mat had been expecting — that was due to Lan, in a way. Rand had been startled beyond anything when he’d found out that Lan and Nynaeve had gotten married, and he’d spent almost two hours rambling about it at Mat the night before they’d all gone to Shadar Logoth together. Apparently Lan had told Rand some fool thing after Moiraine had died about doomed men and poisoned love and other such nonsense, and Rand, like a fool, had taken it to heart and decided to live his life that way.

Seeing that Lan had failed to take his own advice had given Rand pause, and made him think again about some of his more ridiculous notions about Elayne and Aviendha. So that was all to the good.

Five Wise Ones sat in the circle around her inside the tent. Aviendha could almost believe they were still in the Three-Fold Land, except that the ground underneath them was soft dirt and grass. And the color of the sky was different here as well, in the wetlands, though she wasn’t certain she could have explained precisely how. Yet as lush and green as this place was, the Two Rivers had been greener by far. It explained much about Rand and Mat, that they had grown up in such a wet part of the wetlands. Had they ever known thirst?

“Matrim Cauthon, are you listening?” he heard Moiraine ask, in a tone that made him believe that she’d already said his name several times.

She’d woken up? That was good.

He blinked his- his eye and turned to face her.

Light, Moiraine. He’d barely had a chance to really look at her inside the Tower. She’d been unconscious in that odd prison and then Thom had picked her up and been carrying her through all the confusion that had followed, the entire race out of the Tower.

She seemed smaller than he remembered, though maybe that was because she was a bit blurry. Mat wiped the tears out of his eye and focused on her.

“Verin Sedai, you asked to see me?” Gawyn ducked his head under the bird perch hanging off the wall next to her door. It looked worn down by claws, as if it had been occupied in the past, though not in recent months.

Verin Sedai had been out of the White Tower for a long while on unknown business. Whatever her reason for asking to speak with him… perhaps he could use it as an opportunity to ask her about the situation outside of Tar Valon. Elaida had ordered the city closed to all travel in and out, save for Aes Sedai and their escorts, and lately it was difficult to hear even rumors.

He’d dreamed several times now, of Egwene telling him to leave Tar Valon and go to Cairhien. Different settings, slightly different words, but the same urgency in her voice.

A lily, touched with hints of gold along the edges. A replacement for the flower that he’d tried to give her all those months ago.

Rand cupped Elayne’s cheek, brushed his thumb across her lips, pink and perhaps swollen from their night’s work together. Some of her muscles were sore, too. Hopefully, she wouldn’t mind.

Her eyes fluttered open, her blue eyes still hazy with sleep, but he could feel their bond wrapped around him with delight and affection.

“Good morning.”

“A wonderful morning,” she said. Her eyes dropped down to his other hand, where he held the flower. “It’s beautiful, Rand.”

“It cannot come close to matching your beauty,” Rand said. He wove a Keeping on the flower and tucked it behind her ear. “But I tried.”
