A confession from Rand reshapes Mat's future plans and choices.

Mat had — against his will — gotten used to Rand appearing in the middle of the night. It was the safest time for them to meet without anyone knowing that they were communicating. Even though Rand and Mat had already talked out the plan and technically didn’t need to meet up anymore, somehow he still ended up in Mat’s bedroom at least once a week. He would talk about their plans against Illian sometimes, but it was just as likely to be him going on about how confusing women were, especially Aviendha and Elayne Trakand.

Not that Mat disagreed in particular. He’d often found himself perplexed by Aviendha and Elayne too, though certainly not for the same reasons as Rand.

Mat frowned, banishing the memory of red-gold hair.

Not for the same reasons at all.

It was exhilarating to watch a ta’veren at work.

Moiraine kept her face still, vaguely aware of the gentle swaying of the Sea Folk raker, but most of her attention was focused on Rand as he spoke with Harine din Togara Two Winds, a Wavemistress of the Atha’an Miere, and the woman who had been chosen by her people to bargain with Rand.

She got the feeling that Rand didn’t much enjoy the feeling of being shipboard — she didn’t blame him, as she’d always preferred riding herself — but he was doing a good job keeping himself steady and attentive to Harine. He had learned a great deal over the last few months and had come a long away from the young man she’d met in the Two Rivers.

Several times so far in the conversation, Harine had said things that she’d clearly regretted letting slip out, a habit common around ta’veren. Moiraine had suffered from it a time or two herself.

The Great Lord was not going to be pleased.

 Moridin moved a piece on the board, a double-move by his opponent that swept several of his own pieces from play. Al’Thor had managed to hide his plans well enough that Moridin hadn’t guessed correctly, hadn’t anticipated three strikes coming at once — the Great Lord’s influence on the world had been growing steadily over the last few months, and this was a set-back.

 Not defeat, not by any means, but certainly a set-back.

Elayne glanced around the darkened landscape, to the people who would help her with the Bowl of the Winds. Though all the Windfinders who’d been in Tear had been brought to Cairhien by Rand, not all of them were here, only those who could be most useful in a full circle, with the gaps filled by Elayne and several of the Kin who were among the strongest.

They were in a location that Elayne had found in Tel’aran’rhoid — a hollow not too far from Kinslayer’s Dagger. It was well-protected and would limit access by any potential threat. As much as one could in a world where Traveling existed.

 And it was not until they’d arrived at this place that it was revealed to everyone else what the plans were. Elayne pulled the Bowl of the Winds out of the wagon where she'd hidden it and cradled it in her arms as one of the Windfinders, Shalon din Togara, explained to the others what their task was — to use the Bowl to reverse this unnatural heat and bring back the seasons of the world.

 “It’s time,” Narishma said, and Moiraine nodded.

 “I feel it too,” she confirmed. “From the north. An enormous flood of the One Power, coming from two separate locations.”

 “Let’s give them something else to look at,” Mat said, and his medallion cooled on his chest, which meant that Narishma, Moiraine, and Alanna were embracing the One Power and linking together through Callandor. Before now, Narishma had been as discreet as possible when using the Power, using a trick that Asmodean had taught Rand. Something about turning the One Power inside out.

Now, he wasn’t supposed to bother with any of that. He could be as showy as he wanted — needed to be showy, to give the Forsaken yet another bright point in the world to look at. He couldn’t compete against Rand, at least that’s what he said, but he could be a bit of a distraction.
