celebrating matsuwata day (2/7!!! <3) with some timeskip hcs for the babies! established!matsuwata hcs below~ :D also including some hanayaha things bc i'm weak & matsuhana brOTP tagging with spoilers/don’t read if you haven’t finished reading hq!! c:

okay, obvo there's a lot of ground to cover btwn when we last see most of the seijou gang and the nationals game (ch402), but their jobs and locales just give me so many strong feels, esp pondering the idea that at this point neither mattsun or watacchi are pro players weep but watari was honest to goodness one of the best liberoes ;w; i'm biased okay

tbqh i have a feeling that mattsun was not as invested/interested in the pro circuit as oikawa & co., & watari's long known about an old deal mattsun had with hanamaki that "lol i'll go pro if you do"

and yeah that didn't happen

but watari originally attended a local university with going pro in mind; mattsun was a v supportive bf and did his best to attend p much every match

(and pls imagine big ol' smiley mattsun attending a match...and being fairly well-behaved...unless someone embarrassing or loud or cheerful attended with him...like makki or yahaba or yuda...; watari's uni teammates always looked for "watari's cheerleaders" in the crowd XD)

originally, watari also was on the sports medicine/instruction track, like iwaizumi & yahaba

so how, pray tell, did he end up an aquarium employee? *enter major-requirement class, stage left*

one of his early science classes was a life science class, which wasn't too bad (watari always was one of the students towards the top of his class), plus one of his & mattsun's regular go-to date spots is the aquarium (the zoo, too--basically, anywhere where mattsun can take nice pics of watari, esp around cute animals, is a huge plus)

anyway, at some point watari's studies required a couple of internships: the first a more generalized science-based one, the second sports science-specific (if ya can land it/find it)

and it's always that first internship that changes everything, *LOL*

the local aquarium did the university a favor (and watari, since he's a regular customer XD), so he did a short-term internship...and loved it

and watari's rly good with animals?? like. he has the patience from being friends with kyouken and the stamina from volleyball

his agility, tho--they love having him around the baby land animals, bc he can dive like no one else and save any animal from injury no he does not bump them back up like a volleyball but i can't get this image out of my head

and while watari was busy discovering a newfound love for a different occupation, mattsun was busy tryna avoid one planned out for him

ngl, i've long held hcs (x/x) that mattsun's fam comes from some medical bkgd that wants to see him follow in their footsteps if not take over the family business (or end up in the same line of work, even when i don't write them with a medical bkgd: x, x), so him at least being stubborn enough not to go along exactly with their plan and do somewhat as he pleases (playing vb in high school, being friends with makki *LOL*, dating watari, etc.) is v mattsun of him

that said, don't knock it if you kinda know it, right?

so mattsun ends up in a life-and-death-adjacent line of work instead, splitting his time initially working for his fam (my go-to hc is they run an apothecary (x)) and helping out the neighborhood funeral parlor, who are family friends

but he actually handles the parlor work rly well--it gives him a breather bc he doesn't have to juggle too many people at once (instead of taking customer after customer after customer at the apothecary)

plus that mostly poker face of his people actually take comfort in?? mattsun comes across to so many people as so nice, even when he's having a bad day that and he looks so pretty when framed by bouquets of flowers yo

he also has a v set schedule that lets him work around watari's sched easily and fit in makki's drama p well

the biggest hurdle for matsuwata comes when they realize that mattsun's few studies and side-job-turned-real-offer will keep him in miyagi...while watari's changed track (aquarium/zoo studies, with interest in future vet studies) actually will send him far off to kanagawa bc locally there's no room for him (an internship was one thing--a real job was another)

thinking realistically, they don't make any promises of undying love or stuff like that, but they decide to give a long-distance relationship a go...

...and they are a shockingly normal couple in spite of that distance, like, they manage to pull it off hanayaha's kinda jealous whoops

there's a lot of pining and yearning, ofc, but that doesn't last long when matsuwata makes plans to get together--granted, fewer dates take them to the aquarium or zoo now that that's watari's work, but they will seize almost every long weekend that they can and that doesn't require their presence around family

and when they can't be together, regular texts, phone calls, and video calls do the trick, too

but sometimes they'll surprise each other with snail mail, and htg the first time watari opened his mail to discover a love letter from mattsun he turned beet red

but guess what? mattsun was beet red writing his first ever love letter, so there ya go <3

when they're away from each other, mattsun occasionally grabs a bite with yahaba, who's in the same situation (since makki's in tokyo); sharing a meal's not too bad, plus yahaba and watari are still rly close friends, so sometimes it's fun to dish about watari and his different aspects (yahaba teases mattsun for doting on watari...when yahaba's not busy moping about makki)

similarly, watari's become friendlier? reluctantly with makki, *LOL*; tokyo and kanagawa are next-door neighbors, and some of makki's past part-time jobs have been diff restaurants watari's gone to both with mattsun as well as with coworkers, so watari can't shake him makki's deffo on his radar; tbh, tho, while sometimes makki wants to be wild and go to clubs or just be out and about, he's p docile once you get a few beers in him, and he's appreciative of watari's sizable apartment (honestly, watari only manages to take care of him so well thx to mattsun's & yahaba's tips)--watari is a Bad Kouhai™ in that he sometimes thinks of makki as a pet, *LOL*

^that's not too bad, bc makki can be low-maintenance to a point, but sometimes hearing makki bitch about the distance btwn him & yahaba makes watari dwell a little too long on his own loneliness, so sometimes there's an extra call when he or mattsun least expect it

(not that mattsun minds--more watari? ty for inspiring him, makki! <3)

both their jobs have...strong...odors...so matsuwata ends up being a couple doused in cologne, oops on the bright side, one of their favorite activities is sharing the tub and soaking together??

THEIR HAIR! <333 watari's experimenting with his length, cutting it and letting it grow alternating yrs; once it's long enough to style, he toys with it a little--and sometimes mattsun gets the goofiest cutest pics of watari tryna match his style to the different types of crested penguins at the aquarium; as with mattsun, those curls are as luscious as ever and are the first thing watari goes for when they meet up--zoom! his fingers go right into his giant bf's coif XD (not that mattsun minds, esp bc watari still has a habit of running his fingers thru the curls and then back along mattsun's nape~)

mattsun's family home is a big place and he, uh, still hasn't moved out of it yet... *sweats* it's on his to-do list, but he and watari actually have some privacy when watari comes to stay (if watari's parents don't demand he stay with them) bc mattsun's family actually like watari even tho they don't always give mattsun that impression

meanwhile, watari's apartment in kanagawa, as mentioned, is p big, so matsuwata's rly comfy there when mattsun comes down from the north to stay with his bf; actually, usually this is where everyone stays--mattsun when visiting, yahaba when visiting, makki when crashing XD

during the nationals game (ch402), matsuwata & hanayaha are seen out at a restaurant to support argentina bc oikawa, but this place is within walking distance of watari's place bc the quartet are all staying there during nationals

it's after that game that yahaba asks watari if he's always going to be here in kanagawa or somewhere else far from home, & well c'mon of course not--but watari doesn't want to say that to his bestie when he & mattsun haven't had that chat yet

rly, it's a waiting game: just as moving animals around aquariums and zoos is a big, detailed, planned event, so too can be moving their employees/keepers; eventually watari's hopes come true (with some wheels greased by submitting countless transfer requests over the yrs) and he does wind up with a decent position where he originally interned--the aquarium back home where he & mattsun had many a date

matsuwata are that couple who have the patience to be almost 30 before they reunite properly, but yeah they do eventually end up back in the same vicinity, living together & happy & cozy & just--they're that couple you wanna curse bc they have amazing luck but it's not luck, it's hard work that's paid off and AGHHHHH i love them so much ;w;

(aaaaand a few more for the road:)

their apartment is decorated rly serenely, not with an aquatic aesthetic (bc that would drive watari NUTS, surrounded 24/7) but with soft, cool colors (*LOL* my go-tos for them are green & ylw, but ofc you gotta have a little bit of aqua & teal in there, too, bc gotta represent!)

palette aside, mattsun has a collection of stuffed critters from over the yrs, starting from when he & watacchi had begun dating in high school up to now; it was one thing when he occupied his bed alone and watari knows mattsun loves his cushions & pillows, but...pls keep the stuffed animals out of the bedroom, good gods there are a lot of penguins, an otter, several seals and turtles, even a few sharks and rays and a crab

mattsun learned a technique at work, a trick to preserve flowers, so they also have some different flowers around the house, too! (mattsun likes to rotate them out on a regular basis, tho)

despite their volleyball days being behind them, both do keep fit: there's, uh, occasional heavy lifting required of mattsun at work...and watari's always gotta be in top shape to keep up with the animals, so matsuwata stay active together, usually during weekends, sometimes during weeknights before dinner

mattsun's smthg of a homebody, but watari's work could, i think, offer him opportunities to travel abroad; they'd take it and enjoy the sites that way, but these two are deffo done being separated and are happy in japan

honestly matsuwata is that cozy, laidback neighborhood ji-chan couple everyone's just fond of & my heart <3333333333

It's been 2 yrs since I last drew for their ship day and 3 yrs since I last drew them in their fab image colors, so have some self-indulgent Matsuwata in a different style bc I'm always experimenting. XD And an actual (kinda) background bc I rly want to do more like this in the future.

Tl; dr: Matsuwata winter date in fall fashion bc it's been a mild winter here. :P
