Monster High 2 (2023)

My rating: 5/10

The "witchcraft as a queer metaphor" thing in this works even less well than the racism metaphor in the first movie, and the vaguely positive platitudes abound, to the point where half the songs don't actually seem to be about anything except a vague sense of, pardon the thematically appropriate pun, "ghoul power". Whoever wrote this clearly had at least a passing knowledge of Tumblr in the old days.

My rating: 6/10

Eh, it's fine if you don't think about it too hard. Everything is pleasantly colorful and poppy, but it's also trying to have a social conscience - but not very hard, so you just get a lot of platitudes and buzzwords, and the racism metaphor kind of falls apart in a big way if you do think about it. Amuses the hell out of me that they fully turned Clawdeen into a human(ish) sparkledog, though.

Pretty fun take on the whole Freaky Friday "personal growth through shenanigans" formula, with a surprising amount of nuance for a DCOM.
