In the shelter of a wall at the back of the border a group of Matteuccia struthiopteris (shuttlecock fern, ostrich fern, ostrich-feather fern) were thriving. This deciduous fern is stoloniferous forming colonies of erect rosettes.

Found these ferns during an excursion a while back, they were over a meter high and growing in their own miniature “valley” near a creek. I think they’re some kind of Dryopteris or maybe Matteuccia struthiopteris (further down the creek we found ferns we were certain was Matteuccia since we could see the spore bearing structures)... There’s something about large ferns, just makes me want to lie down among them and disappear.
