Happy (almost) Feast of the Baptism of the Lord!

JOKE-OGRAPHY:

In this Bible story (Matthew 3), we meet John the Baptist, a wild prophet who's overtly modelled after the Old Testament prophet, Elijah. He acts as a forerunner to Jesus, preaching and baptizing repentant followers in the Jordan River as they await the Messiah.

In this cartoon, a curious pharisee asks John why he chose the Jordan River as his place of teaching and baptizing. John gives three reasons. This is a framing device for a more Biblically educational cartoon. John did not actually explain his reasoning to pharisees. He was too busy calling them names (Matthew 3:7). Also, the symbolism probably would've been plain to any faithful first-century Jew.

In this cartoon, John's first two reasons speak to parallels and patterns in the Biblical story which call back to the exodus and to the prophet Elijah. I learned about this from the ever-enlightening Brant Pitre in his video on the Mass readings for the upcoming Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. He covers these and even MORE fascinating parallels in a deep but digestible way, so check it out if you love God and His quirky sense of poetry throughout the Bible.

Again, the first two reasons for John's choice of location are very spiritually meaningful. In contrast, his third reason -- "It's got lots of water." -- comes off as comically mundane and practical. Among carefully engineered test groups, this juxtaposition was found objectively hilarious. What right do you have to question that conclusion?

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent you: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4 And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. clothing; food

11 I indeed baptize you with water to repentance: but He that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

12 Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor, and gather His wheat into the garner; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

John Baptizes Jesus

13 Then comes Jesus from Galilee to Jordan to John, to be baptized of him.

14 But John forbad Him, saying, I have need to be baptized of You, and come You to me?

15 And Jesus answering said to him, Allow it to be so now: for thus it becomes us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed Him.

MATTHEW S.O.A.P. ~ CHAPTER 3

SCRIPTURE:

“Change your hearts and lives! "Here comes the kingdom of heaven!” He was the one of whom Isaiah the prophet spoke when he said:  The voice of one shouting in the wilderness,  “Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight.” ~ Matthew 3:2-3

OBSERVATION(S):

Showing my age here, but verse 3 brings to mind the beginning of the '70s musical Godspell ~ the first song, and the only line - "Prepare ye the way of the Lord" 

The first half sung by "John the Baptist"...

The second half sung by the entire chorus...

Sometimes seen as a call to action to get folks ready...

...when it's really a call to action to get myself ready...

...get myself "straightened out"...

All it takes is one person to influence others for Jesus...

I can be that one person... 

Am I?

APPLICATION:

Change my heart and life! Here comes the kingdom of heaven! (verse 2)

Prepare the way of the Lord! Make His path straight. (verse 3)

Produce fruit that shows I have changed my heart and life. (verse 8)

PRAYER:

Father of God Mercy ~

Change my heart and life in preparation for Your coming kingdom of heaven and prepare Your way in my heart and life - may I, with the help and strength of Your Holy Spirit, make Your paths straight... and through Him please produce the fruit that shows I have changed my heart and life in the ways that only You can do and that lead others to Your grace and blessings... Thankfully in Jesus's Name, and for Your great glory, worship, praise, and honor...

He "shaved" up for it.

JOKE-OGRAPHY:

If you look in your Bibles (you brought yours, right?), in Malachi 4:5-6, the Jews are given a prophecy that, before the Lord comes, Elijah will return to turn the hearts of men. In Matthew 3, John the Baptist is introduced through many Elijah-parallels. John lives in the wilderness and wears a camel-hair garment and a leather belt just like Elijah, and he's recognized by many of his Jewish contemporaries as an obvious prophet after centuries of prophet-less-ness. Most importantly, he spends his whole ministry preparing everyone (through his baptisms and his word) for the coming of the Lord, 𝔧𝔲𝔰𝔱 𝔞𝔰 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔭𝔯𝔬𝔭𝔥𝔢𝔠𝔶 𝔣𝔬𝔯𝔢𝔱𝔬𝔩𝔡.

In this cartoon, Jesus and John are portrayed as young cousins, based on Luke's account of their mothers, Elizabeth and Mary, being relatives. Cartoons featuring young Jesus & John have been a fun mainstay in the Tomics line-up for quite some time now. I have a blast drawing them, and I'm very happy when people enjoy reading them! Some might notice that, in my comics, John's original green tunic was recently replaced with the more biblically-accurate camel-hair garment he's wearing here. Consider this cartoon the completely-necessary lore-consistent explanation I know EVERYONE'S been simply DYING for.

In this cartoon, I depict a fictional episode from young Jesus & John's lives where John reveals to Jesus the kind of camel-hair garment he plans to wear in his "wilderness prophet era" (foreshadowing his role in the actual Bible). He refers to it as "Elijah chic" which means "Elijah-inspired elegance and fashion" (foreshadowing his role as a new Elijah). When Jesus asks where he bought the hair, John looks confused and asks, "Buy?" implying he did NOT obtain the hair through monetary transaction, nor did it ever occur to him to do so. Instead, as evidenced by the half-naked camel behind him, he simply cut the hair off a perfectly functional camel to make his costume, much to the distress of the camel's owner. So, no, John didn't buy the hair, but I guess you could say he... "shaved" up for it. (Thank my brother for that one.)
