This week's theme: Siblings!
In Attack of the Clones, Anakin calls Obi-Wan the closest thing he has to a father, but in Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan says Anakin was his brother. Ahsoka also refers to Anakin as her brother in the seventh season of The Clone Wars, but he might have seen her more as a daughter. Anakin is destined to become Darth Father, the ultimate Cinematic Evil Dad, so I appreciate that the Clone Wars TV show gives him the opportunity to be a more nurturing paternal figure.
But I also appreciate the brotherliness of his relationships with these two. The nature of Jedi partnerships change over time, as students grow into adults and become knights themselves. By the end of the war, Anakin and Obi-Wan see each other as equals, even if the Council does not. There is also the religious aspect, since Jedi are a monastic order: in the real world, monks and nuns are all called brothers and sisters. Anakin calls the Jedi his family in the comics, if not the actual movies.
Though this week has shown several siblings who are genetically related, families are far more complicated than that. The Jedi as presented in the prequels are a strange, doomed, and systematically twisted organization, but the familial love between its members is as real as it is forbidden.
