3. SAY THAT! , Matt Pearson [~ Winter Writings ~]
A/N: Anddd for my final wintercore (not really, I plan on doing some feb fluff stuff next month) which I planned to do three piece anthologies for anyway…I decided to just do it and write something for Matt because why do I keep putting it off? Even if it doesn’t do numbers at least I tried writing for a new character! + not anything big.
S/N: This is a fun little show and I just realized who Mekki reminds me of…Sid from skins uk—IYKYK!
PROMPTS ARE FROM HERE & I’m using: ¹²⁾ being stuck at work for the night, watching everyone else celebrate from afar + ¹⁹⁾ waking up the next morning in the wreckage of last night’s party.

Matt Pearson usually tries to remain off his phone when he’s on shift. He’s pretty good at it too. I mean sure, mobile devices can surely be useful and wasteful all mixed into one but he slowly realized it could be beneficial when it came to his new lifestyle.
It’s New Year’s Eve and St. Denis Medical is surprisingly quiet. It’s nice, almost peaceful if Bruce wasn’t constantly sending Matt pictures of women Matt matched with on a dating app? Which Matt was positive he didn’t sign up for. After the fourth photo, Matt stopped texting back, he hated to do it since he and Bruce were becoming buddies but there was no way Matt was ready to jump into a relationship or any one night stands.
That thought alone made Matt’s stomach queasy. The electrolytes definitely helped but pushing the thought to the back of his head was easier said than done.
He couldn’t even enjoy his dinner, the time being after 5pm and he had at least two more hours on his shift. The twelve hour shifts were certainly helping Matt to cover the rent on the two-bedroom apartment he now occupied alone.
Since she left.
His stomach turns as he leans over the desk, thumbs halting over the search bar to type the first letter of her name, knowing she would always be in his recents.
They were on a time difference now. Landed herself a dream job elsewhere that allowed her to put her art-history degree to good use.
She already had to be into the new year, oceans away, probably 1am and Matt can’t help but to wonder what she was up to, how she entered the new year.
So he makes the choice of watching her stories.
Watched how London is treating her, how she embraces it.
The pictures on the feed weren’t enough updates and she’s started posting less there. So sitting on her stories gave Matt something to hold onto…even with people telling him to simply move on.
Except for tonight?
Her stories aren’t accessible—blank except for her pretty profile picture and Matt finds that hard to believe.
He’s got it down, her routine of when she posts—not to be creepy or anything—and even if she was staying in for a major holiday, there would still be a post.
“Hey Serena, I hate to ask you this—
Matt starts, gaze picking up on the dark haired woman in scrubs who just took a seat at one of the computers.
Serena who’s also on her phone, peeks over at the brunette, “Yes she posted at the countdown. Looks like it was a sick party too.”
“Really?” Matt frowns, “How come I can’t see it?”
He shows his phone to Serena who hums and slowly nods her head, “Well considering that she and I are still friends on insta, it looks like she blocked you specifically from seeing her stories, buttercup. Sorry.”
Matt huffs and Serena eyes him almost in pity while she watches her friend sorta deflate. She opens her mouth attempting to smooth over what she just said so causally to the guy that’s just getting used to the modern world.
“I uh. Thanks for confirming.” Matt frowns, “I’m sure she had valid reasons for this. Right?”
His eyes can’t help but to seek reassurance from the crew behind him before turning back to Serena.
“Oh god, Matt.” Serena scowls, “It’s fine to say that her hiding her stories from you hurts your feelings a little bit! I can show you her stories if you want—
Matt quickly shakes his head, “N-No. That’s okay. I respect her choice.”
“I think you should call her. It’ll be a new year for us soon but clearly it’s the same feelings. I don’t know if you’re down for long distance but if you’re still in love with her—which is so obvious that you are. You should say that.” Serena advises, holding his share before placing her phone down and turning her attention to the computer instead.
Matt slowly dips his head, taking in Serena’s words before walking off, finding someplace less anxiety driven. He’s not sure how long he’s walking, even checking over his shoulder to make sure he’s not needed…but he finds himself thinking about how empty the apartment feels even with the things that still linger of her.
She’s left behind a few penguin classics that he offered to ship out to her. The books contain annotations scribbled in and pressed flowers from the spring used as bookmarks. Matt still wears the x-files t-shirt she gifted him because they started binge-watching the show during one of his off days—which is hardly ever—when Oregon got hit with a major thunderstorm back in the beginning of September.
Matt still finds traces of her there and started to learn to give her space, although she constantly held space in his mind.
This blocking from viewing her stories? Made this break-up seem all a little too real.
The reality is that it is real.
That they did break-up and it hurt like hell.
Matt’s breathing gets caught in his throat and he thinks his contacts are playing tricks on him when he catches her name at the top of his screen. He doesn’t want to seem too eager but he can’t tell you how many seconds he waited to answer.
Far in London, she awakes on the floor in front of the couch. Her eyes first pick up on cans, then glitter and smells something rank close by. She doesn’t have to fully turn her head to know that it’s most likely vomit. She sits up on her elbow and forearm, claw-clip digging into the back of her scalp while her eyes are in slits.
It’s her flat alright but she didn’t expect the wreckage afterwards to provide her with a hangover headache. Usually she does well at managing her social drinking so she didn’t have to deal with hangovers the next day but these Brits party different compared to Americans.
Her mouth is dry and there’s a tug in her chest that has her fully sitting up. Her knuckles dig into her eye sockets, rubbing the sand away before she attempts to get up onto her feet. She stumbles, laughing to herself before making her way around to the kitchen.
Which is also a mess.
She nearly slips on what she thinks is a pig in a blanket.
A few moments later a shriek leaves her mouth as she spots her roommates ferret, Jarrett napping in the kitchen sink.
“Nope.” She moves to the fridge, flinching at the lights, finding apple juice and a phone?
Her phone.
She grabs that last.
The phone rings.
He picks up on the sixth ring.
“Hi, Matt. Happy New Year.”
She hears him inhale and can almost picture the usual small smile that appears on his face.
He greets her back, “Hi,” and says her name with a sigh. Soft like the fluff of snow, “…I miss you.”
Matt blurts it out but it’s genuine.
She knows it.
Her heart pounds.
It’s everything.
