So I thought today was an appropriate day to post this up as America is dominating our hearts and minds like a naughty toddler that hasn’t revealed quite what mood it’s in! I’ve been reading Why Visit America by @mwektaehtabr (Matthew Baker)! It’s a collection of short stories that were published variously in different publications but they all deal with similar themes. Satirically looking at different potential futures of America in an intimate way by focusing on the people, Baker shows that he has a specific way of looking at the world. I’ll be honest, I haven’t finished this book yet but the stories I have read I’ve enjoyed to a degree. When reading these little vignettes I’ve wanted to know more about things that Baker races past, and wanted to know less about the things he gets caught up in telling us about. I sometimes get the feeling I’m a teacher marking a student’s essay and they’re trying to bump up the word count by listing things rather than developing the story. I’m enjoying the stories being told but I’m not entirely gelling with them. Maybe it’s the type of books I tend to read being quite different to these short stories, but I leave each of them wanting to know a bit more than I’m shown. Maybe that’s a good thing. #matthewbaker #whyvisitamerica #bookstagram #books #shortstories https://www.instagram.com/p/CHLCBECH34cYG9aZUU1nHzzxxD_LiLozZrnmRc0/?igshid=1j397o7j0xbtt
